Electric/Electronic Mysteries
Two things have started to happen recently,
1. When I get home and put the car in park, the car shuts off completely. It doesn't power down as in the auto start/stop function. It shuts off as I turned it off manually.
2. Sometime when I walk around the back, the liftgate open by itself. This is going to be a problem someday either when I walk away and the rear opens and the car is basically not secure. The other issue, and probably most llikely, it will decide to open when it's in the garage and slam into the garage door (when closed).
Thoughts from te forum?

I’ll cautiously say the car totally shutting down as if you pressed the start/stop button doesn’t sound right if all you did was put it in park.
The tailgate is probably opening because your foot triggered the feature based opening. It’s easily done, happens to me a lot when I’m washing the car. Ironically when I first bought it I had trouble figuring out the right gesture to make it open when I wanted it to, now I’ve noticed it’s easy to accidentally engage it. I’d grade the feature as “needs work”.

I swear that four or five times now (bought in July) ours will turn off when i put it in park in the garage and never has done it anywhere else... i had written it off to autostop feature but wasnt really sure and didn't think so as the temperatures in Houston typically keep autostart from even shutting it down at redlights... it's like it knows it's home. I read the entire owner's book twice and didn't notice this as a "feature"... haven't gone back looking for it.
Tail gate sounds about par for course... I've opened it a few times succesfully and a few times by accident. Had to catch it from banging the garage door once.

This happens to me all the time. It seems to know I am maneuvering to park (low speed, back and forth etc) so when I go to P it shuts down. I guess I don't mind it since it hasn't occurred when I didn't want it to. My initial problem was that it happens very quickly so I used to hit the on/off a split-second after it happened and restarted the engine.
Regarding the liftgate, it is more responsive to my dogs than my foot. The feature should be changed so the orientation of the needed leg kick is front-to-back instead of side-to-side, I think that's why others have reported the liftgate opening for animals or simply walking past it (like me). I wonder if we can make an adjustment ourselves by rotating a sensor and whether the feature has its own sensor or if it uses the collision warning sensors.

On the shutting off in park it's a 'feature'. Drives my wife crazy as it doesn't always do it so sometimes she starts it up again when she presses the button to turn it off.
The dealer could never explain the specific logic for when it does it - appears to be if you put it in park then undo the seatbelt that sometimes does it. Similarly the door seems to have an effect too. But we've never been able to replicate exactly
Think also if in gear and open the driver door it either puts in neutral or shuts off

My 2017 has never shut off when put into park.
And like some others, when I first got it, I had trouble getting the tailgate to open with a kick.
Now, it does it almost every time. And though the kick is supposed to be side to side, it seems to work well with the in/out motion.
But, it does it sometimes when I just walk by the back, and sometimes when I don't feel I was close enough to activate it.
I don't have a problem in my garage - it won't hit my door.
But I do have a problem when it closes on my, or my wife's head. It has done it to both of us.
I use the feature sometime but if I could deactivate it I would.
I doubt anyone could turn the sensor 90 degrees to change the foot motion. I was unable to find the sensors when I looked for them.
I also leave my key on my workbench when washing the D5. Not only could the tailgate open, but I don't like the repeated locking and unlocking of the doors and folding and unfolding of the mirrors every time I run a sponge or water over the door handle.

From the user guide for my 2018
WARNING
If Drive (D), Sport (S), or Neutral (N) is selected, the driver exit feature switches the vehicle's ignition off if the following conditions exist:
The driver's seat belt is unbuckled, and:
The brake pedal is released.
If Park (P) is selected, the driver exit feature switches the vehicle's ignition off if the driver's seat belt is unbuckled.

Maybe I am not understanding this or this is some fakakta English logic. I am in the car, the car is in Park, I unbuckle my seatbelt, the car shuts itself off??? It decides when to shut off?? How does this make sense? What if I am in my car and I need to go outside to take care of something? Or I am working on my car and I need it to be on and running (and in Park)???
I can see that if it's in a Drive mode, I can see that as a safety feature (my BMW had it and It saved my bacon once). But in Park???? What kind of control freaks/safety ***** are these people who design these cars??
