I buy my DEF from VW dealer as it is closer to me than the LR dealer. VW also sells a 2.5 gallon jug. It has the manufactured date clearly printed on the bottle. Part Number: GUS052910A3
I wouldn't trust one of the truck stop DEF dispensers.
I tried out my 1.25 inch whole saw bit to make a funnel out of the half gallon bottle; just cut a hole in the middle of the bottom. It works great if you have a flexi-funnel tube like the one that comes with the Peak brand 2.5 gallon box; no mess at all. If you plan to pour the DEF into the bottle directly, you'll have to cut the entire bottom off of the bottle. I used a 2.5 gallon from VW; it had no funnel but Home Depot stocks disposable flexi-funnels that fit for a dollar. O'reilly sells a re-usable version for 6 bucks. If you're using a flexi funnel without a breather hole, you'll have to poke a hole in the top of the 2.5 gallon bottle.
