Otherwise, when I turn the front/rear fog lights on manually, there is no indicator that lights up on the dash, but I can physically see they are on.

Then you have a problem - the dash should ALWAYS illuminate with the fog light symbol if they're on. Green for front, amber for rear.

Exactly. I have the analog cluster in the D5 and it displays the green and amber lights when the fog lights are on. We also have the digital cluster in the other Land Rover (D90) and it also displays fog lights icons when they are on.
