Default Looking at used discovery - what year has Carplay?

We're looking at a used Discovery and were trying to figure out what model years have carplay.

I can't imagine using an SUV that doesn't integrate with a phone. Without carplay is the navigation free and/or any good?

I have a 2020 Discovery 5 with CarPlay. I believe starting in 2019.

My 2018 has it. Think the software is updatable on all of them for it. Dealer needs to add the 'smartphone pack' to earlier models. they technically charged a few hundred dollars but most incl mine did it for free at annual service

It's wired connection, not Bluetooth/wireless for the CarPlay. (You can Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, but CarPlay needs wire)

Works well for me. Built in nav is fine - better than many. But waze much better!

My 2017 has it, wired, not bluetooth. Dealer activated it free during an update.

Theoretically all should have it as it was offered as a free update to all cars in the US. My 2017 did not have it, received a letter from JLR to let me know the infotainment would be updated free of charge, which my dealer did. It all depends on whether the seller had the update done or not.

As for your navigation question, I find it to be pretty good. Map updates are available for free for first four years (I think) after that you’ll need to pay. Map update process could be simpler, but nothing hard (need to create a Land Rover HERE account, download a program to your PC and then you download updates to USB and install in car - car installation is the easiest part). In our case, we have an AT&T data plan in the car, so navigation uses it for traffic info and to do searches online. Not sure how it works offline.

Once our free map update subscription expires later this year I am not sure I would renew given we have Carplay.

The truth is, your phone navigation will always be superior and more up to date than your vehicle system. I don't see the point in paying for updates once expired.

I agree, the phone navigation is better than the car.

The only negative about using the phone bag over the car is I don’t get the turn instructions in the dash gauge display which I really like as I don’t like having to look down to the center console. Plus it frees up the center console display for non Nav stuff.

If you magnetic mount the phone to the dash just to the right of the instrument cluster, you can use phone for waze, center LR screen for car functions, and instrument panel for speed

I use the Scosche mount which is very clean
