Trading in my 2013 V8 LR4 HSE, damn I loved it. She’s got 172k miles on her and still going strong, but time for an upgrade.
I went in for a defender, but was shocked with how much more value the Discovery offers. Plus, just too many Defenders on the road, and many often driver by bit coin bros, along with the X5 and g wagon. I like the quiet elegance of the discovery.
Starting to look at used (2021 -2024) models and was wondering if there were any significant differences between the years, and if certain packages offer a lot more than others.
I am also skeptical about a v4 engine (esp after having a V8 LR4), so I’ll def go for the V6 unless others mention there isn’t a material difference.
What are some experiences with this car? How does the Metropolitan edition compare to the HSE?
Coming from a similar platform (LR3) as you I had the same thought on Disco v Defender and have been pleased thus far. They are a great value prop though they don’t have the ‘looks’ of a Defender.
Think one of the biggest questions you may need to ask is “do I need/want a two speed transfer case” which could significantly pare down what you can choose from. While I chose a pre-facelift 2020, in my search the two speed transfer case was far rarer on 2021+ models for whatever reason (similar to facelift LR4’s).
I had a 2011 LR4 V8 and I replaced it with a 2021 P300 I4 Defender 110, and I was worried that I would be giving up a lot of power, but honestly, the four cylinder is more than adequate. 0-60 takes 7 seconds, only 3/10ths slower than the LR4. I originally intended to get the P400 I6, but the early cars had weird throttle programming that I couldn't get used to, despite having an electric supercharger and little electric motor to mitigate turbo lag, it was completely dead under 2500 rpm. The I4 has some turbo lag at wide open throttle under 3500 rpm when coming from a stop, but in normal driving, it is linear and responsive, and peak torque comes it at 1500 rpm. I also had a 2017 D5 HSE Luxury Si6 (supercharged V6) from 2017-2022 and I really miss it. Mine was Aintree Green over Vintage Tan/Ebony. The color was only available for the 2017 model year and less than 100 were brought over to the US in this color. The Discovery is a better value, more luxurious, and a much better family car. The Defender looks better, is more capable off-road, and has better driving dynamics with noticeably less body roll than the D5.
I have driven the facelift D5 with both the P300 I4 and P360 I6 MHEV, and I would recommend getting the I6. While I like the P300 a lot in my Defender, it just didn't suit the Discovery as well as it does in the Defender. It is still plenty powerful, but it just doesn't feel as strong as it is in the Defender, nor is it as smooth. But for a four cylinder, it is incredibly smooth.
All 2017-2020 D5s with seven seats had a 4WD system with two speed transfer case and an infinitely variable locking center differential, with a rear locker being an option. This is important for off-roading, and an absolute must in my opinion. The two speed transfer case was an option on five-seat models, and the standard AWD system used a Torsen center differential, and no low range. The two-speed transfer case was standard on the P360 from 2021-2022, and became a $2000 option from 2023-onward and bundles the two speed transfer case, rear locking differential, All Terrain Progress Control and Configurable Terrain Response. It is hard to find a 2023+ D5 with this important feature. Also, the D5 now uses a rear-biased AWD system that can completely disconnect the front axle for better fuel economy.
I have attached a thread I started comparing a service loaner D5 to my Defender and my old D5 that I owned. Might be beneficial to check it out:
Great stuff - thanks to both of you. Gives me confidence in my decision to go with a disco and also for the v6 over v4. Have a great holiday.
Inline-6 and an inline-4. Not a V6 anymore. Not trying to be a smartass, just trying to inform you. Best of luck with the search and keep us updated. Have a great Thanksgiving as well!
Is there much difference in a V6 and an inline? I have no idea.
I have a 2018 and got to drive a 2024 SE while it was in the shop. The steering on the 24 seems more crisp and focused. I like the thickness of the steering wheel. Not as much a fan of the updated shifter, the haptic buttons in the 2024. The button presses are so crisp and sound pleasant on the 18. I do not like they got rid of the physical access height buttons. I tried to turn off the auto hold function but it seemed to work regardless. I guess it's the little things you notice when there 's no major differences.
Other than that they seemed almost identical. I like the tailgate that drops down in my 2018 - it's fun to sit back there with the kids, or change a baby on a road trip.

Big difference. The engines share nothing in common. The I6 is a completely new modular design and an MHEV system with an electric supercharger and a twin-scroll turbocharger. And by design, I6 engines are naturally balanced. The supercharged V6 is the 5.0 V8 blcok with six cylinders drilled into the block instead of eight. It also has a different crankshaft and added balance shafts to help with NVH levels.
For the 2021MY facelift, JLR replaced the supercharged V6 with a 360 horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged and electrically supercharged MHEV I6. They dropped the Td6 diesel and now offer a 300 horsepower 2.0-liter I4 as the base engine.
I am back in the 2024 Discovery loaner. I think the biggest random improvement is the camera system. It is so much better than the 2018. I was shocked at how high quality the views were and how you could actually look at it and see what you were driving into at speed, even up to 65 mph plus and you can get a 360 view with guidelines that is incredibly detailed and easy for your eyes to understand. Understand. It's much better than the 2018 which is still rather rudimentary and not even useful going 10 miles an hour looking straight on. I think that would be really helpful off-road.
That accurate side view would have been fantastic when my vehicle was up against a drop off on one side and a tree on the other side this weekend 😎 It accurately captures what is under the vehicle 😮
