I have a dilemma which I imagine some of you have seen nowadays with the way used car prices and availability works.

I can get myself into a 2018 disco with 30k Kms with the old diesel TD6 (I believe) for about 68USD...alternatively..i can get a completely new disco ingenium diesel by maybe the end of the year, and I would add the off road pack and rear locking diff (not available basically in any used diesel where I am from) for about 95USD. The only downside is that there is probably at least a 10 month wait. From teh value perspective, i have calculated a few times that I am ebtter off with the new car because of the warranty. The con of course is the wait time and the depreciation. I imagine if i resell the disco 5 within 2 yrs i will take a loss of about 10K max..my guess is if i sell the new disco 5 within two years i will probably take closer to a 20K depreciation hit.

Any comments..love to hear from you all..

FYI, Both are 5 seaters and considered commercial good spec'd..major differences minus the facelift changes is that the new version has the rear sunroof whereas the used one is sealed (to meet commercial vehicle requirements)

 

I doubt very much that you will get $58K in two years for a 6 year old 45K or more mile Discovery.
I kind of think $68K is too much for that 2018 model now.
But diesels are hard to come by so maybe I'm incorrect.
If you can get a used gas engine Discovery now for $10K less than your 2018 option, and you sell in 2 years, you have just paid an extra $10K for the diesel.
Does it give you $10K worth of extra anything over the next 2 years to make it worthwhile?
If my numbers are off you can change them and reconsider what it's worth to you.

 

I am in the USA. I bought a used 2019 Disco 5 HSE LUX TD6 loaded with everything. Intelligent seating. Massage seats. Heated all 3 rows etc with 27000 miles for $58k USD. I think that 2018 is way too high

 

How are the massaging seats? Worth the extra money? We have a build with the heating/cooling already, so only 800 more.

 

They are okay. Don’t use them much. Probably worth $800

 

Thanks for the reply. so where I am at so car prices are typically higher anyway.. the version I am looking at now are the commerical versions (5 seaters with diesel, which i like) so brand new they are usually around 95K (non rdynamic version). If its petrol 7 seater, brand new is about 125 USD.

But yes, depreciation wise, i believe the model i am looking at should be abt 60k vs 68k. I just don't want to get hit huge on selling out a brand new car two yrs later when covid, hopefully, has passed and then i get the double whammy of being the first owner who sells and then selling it when people can travel again.. But this is helpful..i might just wait until i can find a used one where I can get a really good deal on so I dont take a huge loss on resale..but having see the lr owners forum on facebook..i feel like the water leakage and engine failures seem way more common than i have ever seen in any owners forum for any car.
