No explanation for that one but it did the rest of the 3000-mile trip without complaint.

These shutdowns really not welcome when towing in the desert, out of cell range, even if they are programmed for a valid reason in protecting the mechanical components from possible damage … we’ll have to see if ancient Detroit iron can outwit modern Euro-Asian smarts in the long run.
Are these engine shut-downs or transmission limp mode instances?

I've towed in similar situations over long steep grades +100F temps with a 7500lb travel trailer. I do monitor trans, engine oil, coolant and diff temps with a cellular phone OBD app. I would see elevated temps, which should be expected given grade and ambient conditions. I'd adjust driving behaviors to accommodate to mitigate over temp situations, basically slowing down a little. One instance I did pull over to let things cool down, but not because land rover provided gauges indicated any concerns or degradation in performance, just my discretion. I agree, all vehicles have their limits based on design, exceeding those limits can end in unsavory circumstance. I've seen 'merican iron broken down due to exceeding design parameters as well. Buying bigger just raises the ceiling, barring disrepair. If Land Rover is going to market towing as a feature, they might consider providing instrumentation and indication to drivers that limits are being approached; as does GM/Ford/Dodge etc. .Not simply shutting down once the vehicle is "in the red".

Hi Ryan,

As I have the same idea while towing my trailer may I ask which OBD device you use?

Thanks

I use Torque on Android and Bluetooth OBD data link adapter. Adapters can be had on Amazon cheap.

Thanks!
I‘ve been looking for an OBD adapter for my Disco but seems like there is some issue with the controller not going to sleep. Any issues with battery being drained due to that? Any special bluetooth adapter you can suggest?

Also I will have to check for a good SW as it will have to run on under iOS, not Android. Seems like the range of SW for iOS is a bit smaller.

Thanks again

The vehicle will stay awake if your App is connected with the vehicle over CAN. Just make sure the app is completely closed or just unplug the adapter when you're not using it. LR is not unique in this instance other makes have the same challenge. My "old" 2001 M5 for example. The adaptor I have is roughly a decade old and it works. I think the link below is the modern equivalent.

I assume engine shutdowns - "Restricted Performance Mode". I've jnow got the OBD bluetooth dongle but didn't have it at the time of these shutdowns.
