2nd D1 in 30 days
Bought a 1999 D1 SD in Richmond (VA), and have plans for that one, since I work on Langley AFB in Hampton (VA). My home of record is in So Cal, and I flew back for my oldest daughter's college graduation. Being the Craig's List junkie that I am, I found a 1994 D1 with low miles (104K) in the San Fernando Valley, and decided to buy it as a spare vehicle for my wife and two daughters. I have three licensed drivers with three vehicles in So Cal, so this will be an extra to have around just in case. My daughters absolutely LOVE driving this '94, and we actually got to take it a little off-road this afternnoon, leaving the dirt parking lot in a field that was against a hill, after graduation. The D1 drove thru the dirt, scrub, small ripples in the ground like it was nothing. And when we finally got on to hard pavement, we passed a Jeep Cherokee that got stuck trying to go over a rather large log back in the dirt field we just left. One front wheel was on one side, the other front wheel was on the other, so the front wheels were straddling this log, and I think the front suspension was hung up on the log. But there were some people helping them out, so I think they eventually got unstuck.
Some initial impressions I have about this '94 in So Cal versus the '99 in VA. The 3.9 V8 feels considerably less powerful than the 4.0 in mine. I actually like the lack of power seats and the cloth interior in the '94. I like how the Range Rover wheels look on the '94 as well. I had to spend $450 on the '94 to get it to pass smog, even though it passed the actual "emissions" test, it failed the "visual" test (don't get me started on the assinine smog test in CA!). The seller had a smog cert from Sep 2013, so I didn't think it would fail like it did. The Michelin LTX tires on the '94 are smaller (225/75-16) than the 235/70-16s on my '99, so when those tires on the '94 wear out, I'm putting on at least 235/70s, if not maybe 245/75s. The '94 is going to stay pretty much unmolested, and I'll use my '99 to satisfy my need to tinker (2" lift, muffler, shocks, 245/75 or 265/75 tires, etc).
Here's some pics of the '94:

I figured with 104K miles, as long as it wasn't a trail rig, it should've been in fairly decent shape, and it was, all things considered. The PO bought it and did some maintenance to it (plugs, wires, radiator, water pump, t-stat, speakers, s-belt, Bilstein shocks, etc), and was going to ship it to his father in the Philippines. But unfortunately, he passed away before he got the chance, so he just used it primarily to haul two jet skis with his sons. This guy knows his way around cars, because he had a couple of Gen I BMW 325s in his back yard, a 5-series wagon out front, and a nicely restored 2002 with Panasport wheels.
So I got a warm fuzzy from this seller, and decided to pull the trigger at $2300. He gave me an extra set of wheels that had 255/65 tires on them, the old metal radiator, and this trim kit that replaces the side moulding, that also goes around the fenders (I'm thinking that kit is going on my '99!). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the '94 won't need any unscheduled maintenance for a while, so we'll see how it goes.
