About to leap in
Hi Folks,
I am looking for a replacement for my old wagon and love the looks, feel and drive of the Disco's. However, I need something that is reliable and safe, as it will be used to truck my kids around. I have a line on a 2003 Disco HE with 100, 000 km's for roughly $23,000. It's black, spotless and looks great. Questions:
1. Is this good value @ $23,000. (That is Canadian $'s, I'm in BC)
2. Is it on par with other SUV manufacturer's in terms of reliability?
3. Will I have to take out a mortgage to put gas in it?
4. What is the saftey record like on these?
5. Is there anything I should check on this car before purchasing?
Sorry about all the questions, but it seems like people on this board know their Land Rovers and I don't (yet)!
Thanks in advance,
G

Sounds like a nice vehicle. Read my technical sections at www.eurotekapg.com for a little primer of what to look for. Some of your questions are little hard to answer as this model year is fairly new, and does not seem to have some of the problems that plagued the earlier years. But-- as I tell everybody--unless there are good service records with the vehicle I would be very wary. Many people sell them when they are presented with a "grocery list" of items needing attention, and they decide to bail out and sell it instead.
Land Rovers have always been exceptional from a safety/collision point of view.
Are they reliable?. Well the industry states they near the bottom right now in this area. But there are plenty here that have Land rovers with excellent reliability. What is required is more owner participation in servicing and observing/listening for potential problems with a Land Rover as opposed to Asian, American, or other European SUV's (even though Mercedes owners are trying a class action suit against the factory for dismal reliability). What you gain over most of these other makes is a very capable vehicle for off-road use, and one that possesses more character.
Mileage?--- 12-18 under the best of conditions.
