Default First time buyer advice??

Hi All,

Just joined and appreciate the community. I've long admired these vehicles, and am now looking at making a purchase. I'm looking at a disco I or II potentially. I've read about the head gasket issues (sounds like it's more of a II problem than a I problem?), and the driveshaft (again - more of a II than a I problem?) destroying the tranny, but any other major things to look for in making my first purchase?

I've found someone selling a '99 disco II for $7,700. The seller says it has already done the head gasket work, and upgraded the drive shaft. Says he recently replaced the shuttle packs and TC and HDC work "flawlessly". It has 148k miles on it. Does this price seem fair? Should I buy?

Any other advice for a first-time buyer would be greatly appreciated.

Again, really appreciate the add to this community. Hopefully I'll be joining the ranks of ownership soon.

Just realized I probably should've put this in a forum other than "new member"...

Sounds like a good rover but nearly 8k for a 99' with 150,000 miles is just not right. I would look elsewhere. I bought my 04' Disco with 125,000 miles for much much less.

I bought my 02 DII with about 120k miles( I cant remember) for little over 2k, 2 years ago. It is not in perfect by any means.

I think 8k is a lot of money in 2017 for a DII regardless of its mileage or/and condition.

In short: walk away.

Asking price is laughable. He should know you'll never get out of a rover what you put in. Unless you restore RRC's to factory.

DONT. DO. IT.

Thanks all for the advice, really really appreciate the input. What would you say is a fair price for one that's had the work done (head gasket/drive shaft) already vs one where I would have to do the work myself?

Also with the three amigos - are there actual issues with the ABS/HDC/TC or is the common issue just with the lights themselves coming on even though the systems are operating correctly?

I'm open to buying one cheaper and attempting to work on it myself. My mechanic experience is pretty limited, but with the right research and enough time on youtube I'm sure I could have a good time figuring it out.
