I have a 97 D1, less bells and whistles and simpler to work on for part time village idiots like me. Many problems in Rovers revolve around cooling system being not so good, from lack of care. A scanner or Ultra Gauge is a good thing so you can see temps in exact fashion.
With a 180F stat I am able to run 183-187 on the road. Had copper radiator rodded out by an indy shop, calcium build up would not flush out. A good radiator test is measure temp on the fins when warmed up and off, top to bottom. More than 10F means lower rows can have gunk buildup.
Lots of fluids to change on the bottom side because they have never been touched. 85W140 is thicker and quiets the old transfer case and differentials. A fun truck to own and wrench on.
Exercise the CDL locking shifter, many mall cawlers never engaged it and it can become very difficult to use.
Pix of Ultra Gauge ($70) on a D2, and scanner data from a D1. Note gauge positions.
