Hello Everyone!
Hi all! My name is Alex and I very recently purchased an 03 Discovery SE with 88k miles. My dream car is a top of the line Range so I take this as a step in the right direction. My car of the last 5 years was a Chevy Malibu, so becoming acclimated to a car this big and high up has been a pleasant challenge, not to mention going from 28mpg to 12.... I live in the Bay Area and look forward to learning the ins/outs of my new car as well as soaking up all the valuable knowledge and insight from you all!!!

1. Welcome.
2. Inspect front drive shaft, it needs to have multiple grease fittings and be serviced at oil change intervals. If original stock, it can split with no warning and poke big hole in transmission case, which means new transmission, no repair. Rebuild of prop shaft covered in our tech section.
3. You will also find a 60K mile major service list, need to address all of those.
4. In the tech section you will find coverage of which oil and filter to use. No oil gauge, but you can add one, or have it tested.
5. Do not let temp gauge go above 50% without inspection. Overheating is big issue if not caught in time. Look at an Ultra Gauge. Factory gauge programmed to read steady for very wide temp range, you don't know you are moving up until after it has happened.
6. Download the RAVE - a set of factory shop and owner manuals for your truck - free below.
7. Try not to off road on Lombard Street....

Car overheated yesterday....smoke billowing and everything. I am a complete novice at this...what could be the problem? The temp gauge went to hot almost immediately and the car overheated shortly thereafter. What are my best/worst case scenarios?

Best case scenario is a blown cooling system hose, likely since you had smoke coming from the engine. Worst case is the blown hose and overheating likely damaged cylinder head gaskets. Not something a complete novice would want to tackle.
