Hi, new here + '19/'20 D5 vs Telluride?
Hi, I'm hopefully a soon-to-be new Discovery owner. After a long wait, my wife and I have finally gotten around to refreshing our cars. A year ago, we test drove a 2017 Discovery and I've been pining over it since. When we decided to take a more serious look about a month ago, my wife immediately vetoed a Land Rover and so we ultimately landed (no pun intended) on a Kia Telluride, specifically the 2023 SX-Prestige, which is top of the line. I've found the car I want, in-stock, negotiated the price I wanted all-in, the trade value for my trade and got my financing approved with the paperwork waiting to be printed at the Kia dealer.
But... I can't pull the trigger. As luck would have it, now that there's a real decision on the table, my wife has opened the door to the Discovery "if that's what I really want". For the same dollars, I can do a 2019 HSE Luxury or a 2020 HSE so that it's comparable cost to the Telluride option.
I searched the site and don't see any threads or posts about the Telluride, which frankly isn't surprising since its more of an economy mid-size SUV, even if it's at the top of the heap and has some luxury leanings. It's a really solid choice, highly reliable, great tech, good looking (in fact, much of its look feels very Discovery-esque to me). It's a clear #1 in the segment and demand is through the roof right now so it holds its value nicely for now.
Although I've not owned a LR before, I've read and heard that reliability can be an issue, particularly around the 2017/2018 D5s (eg, windshield leaks, etc). Assuming I prepare myself mentally for those sorts of issues, I think I can live with the reduced reliability vis a vis the Telluride, and maybe some of the issues are less pronounced in the 2019/2020 D5s? For what it's worth, I'm currently driving a 2011 Lexus RX450h, which drives like new despite its age (only 78k miles). Before that, I drove a Toyota Solara coupe for 18 years. I'm used to reliable cars that I can drive forever so I've heard I need to get ready for a different experience with Discovery (one that's worth it).
In any case, has anyone looked at the Telluride and can offer a view? I get it's a bit apples to oranges and hopefully people aren't offended by the comparison!
Welcome any thoughts and opinions and thanks in advance!
