Default new advice on a 2002 freelander s

I looked at and drove a 2002 s model. I liked it and am seriously considering ownership. It had 38k on it
Now the sad part. I have heard and read that it is totally unreliable and that the vehicle will be spending most of its life in the shop.
That the vehicle is prone to overheating, that the engine lifters will click after so many miles, that the intake runners evetually be an issue, that the ck engine could
come on for no reason at all.

Is this all true. I am meticulous when it comes to maintaining vehicles, the notion that ROVERS are unreliable is starting to sink in, hence I should look elsewhere or are these vehicles just getting a bad rap? Any input would be very much appreciated
