Default New to Disco. Need Advice

Hey Everyone,
I am potentially a new DISCO member. I was strolling around near the beach yesterday when I found an '04 Disco II HSE for sale. I spoke with the owner, checked it out as best I could, and rode it around. Nothing stuck out as a problem with the truck, but I wasn't in a place to buy it at that time. Upon getting home I started doing some searching on the Disco, I had never considered buying one before, and found an onslaught of horror stories. I then found this forum which gave a much more level view of the DiscoII, a troubled truck that can be maintained and be awesome. I have never done much automotive repair myself, but am not afraid to try. Part of wanting an older truck is to work on it with my kid who is really into cars.
Ok. So here comes the advice. Is this truck something I should buy based on my limited experience working on automobiles and knowing NOTHING of Discos.
Here is what I know of it:
  • 2004 HSE Disco II
  • 216k miles
  • One owner
  • Never used off-road
  • Serviced Regularly
  • Carfax shows thermostat changed, nothing beyond engine serviced to possibly indicate head gaskets
  • Adjustable suspension changed for non-adjustable suspension
  • Three amigos lights are on (they say they have been on for years)
  • Sunroofs leak and have been caulked close
  • Small superficial rust around back sunroof
  • Potentially most important Price: $3600.
I would love any input. Unfortunately, I need to make a decision pretty quickly due to some logistic issues. Thank you in advance for any replies.

If you’re willing to work on it yourself and learn as you go, the Disco is an awesome vehicle. $3,600 doesn’t sound way out of line for a vehicle with that many miles and a few issues, but you should probably offer less as it’s not perfect.
All of us on this forum love our Discos and there’s lots of good luck help here with any issue you will encounter.
