Just purchased a 99 Discovery. Going to be driving it all summer and getting it ready for my move to Fairbanks Alaska in August to go to school. Any tips for such a long drive in a Land Rover?

Congrats on the 'new' Rover. How many miles? Is it a DI or a DII? If it's a DII, you'll need to check on your front driveshaft to see if it's been replaced or rebuilt (do a search and read the "write up" section"). Do you have service records from the previous owner(s)?

1. Do Mike's 60K service so you are 100% confident in the fluids in your truck (plus this is a great way to get to know your truck so if you have problems in the boonies, you have some sort of idea what your are dealing with.
2. Map out your trip, locating Indie Rover Mechanics along the way in case you run into big trouble
3. Carry plenty of extra fluids (antifreeze, oil, etc)
4. Bring tools, extra hoses, clamps, fuses, etc

 

Bought it from the original owner. It's got 125k miles and the engine has never been opened according to him and the service records. Its a D1. I've already serviced the tranny, differentials, and transfer case, changed the oil and flushed the cooling system. Doing spark plugs and wires this weekend. Considering doing the major gaskets like head, front cover, and oil pan but I don't know if I should mess with something that isnt broken.

 

A little preventative maintenance never hurt, and if you get it done now, you can focus on enjoying the Alaskan winters IN your Disco, rather than UNDER it

 

I say...bring snacks and pick out the good radio stations before hand.
