There are good deals out there. In 2008 I drove about 500mi one-way rental to pick up my first Rover, a '99 DII from some sketchy hispanic individuals who held every $100 up to the light to check if they were legit.
....anyways I drove it back through "snowmageddon" literally on I95 straight into it.
That'll change your impression of rovers for life.
8 years later I now am on my 3rd rover and plan to keep these two for life (that DII and an LR3, after selling RRS).
I spent $3500 cash on this thing and IT STILL RUNS FINE. Rebuild the air suspension with a new design + arnott springs and it's been perfect for years. Such an amazing buy. Something similar 8 years later should cost around 2k-2.5k leaving you amazing room for upgrades.
I mostly drive the LR3 but firing up the Disco always puts a smile on my face driving around the country on the weekends with the GF and the dog
