Defenders weren't build in 1972, so I assume it's a Series Land Rover. So yes, it would be fine to try to start it by rolling it, assuming the engine isn't seized.
If it were mine I would leave the fuel shut off, put it in gear and have someone tow you around some to get the oil flowing in the engine before you then turn on the fuel to try to start it.
Make sure the coolant level is good before starting it.

good point Spike. Unfortunately I neglected to mention the obvious (to me) to drain and replace with new fuel.
After a year the diesel is likely full of bacterial scum anyway, unless a bio-cide was added.

The diesels had hand cranks as well, but it's not particularly fun to do because of the high compression of a diesel.
My Series petrols I hand cranked on a few occasions. One of my 6cyl I did for over a month in a Vermont winter in '80 because I was broke and couldn't afford a starter solenoid.

Its a bitch hand cranking a engine petrol or not, we had a 1936 Allis Chalmers with hand crank and if you forgot to charge the battery you hand to hand crank it.
Do that once or twice and you would'nt forget to hook up the battery charger ever again. (it didnt have a alternator, it ran off a magneto but it also had a electric starter so the battery was used for starting only)
