Not super off topic, but has anyone ever done a fly and drive?

I'm looking for my first LR on autotrader, and deciding whether I want to fly and drive it back (live in WI).

 

i did a ship and drive with mines some years ago ( shipped from UK , drove out the container in Trinidad ).....was worth it totally , because i paid much less for much more , compared to buying it locally....

depends what you get and condition. There are plenty of Land Rovers around in wisconsin , Ill, MN, etc that you should be able to pick up without having to fly somewhere to get it. Unless it is something rare or exotic. If it is just for the price, figure in airfare, travel time, gas, etc and you may be better off buying something with a higher price locally.

 

I wouldn't want to fly somewhere, view and buy a truck and then drive it away any real distance. If I did I'd check it out so thoroughly including service records it would need around a 3-4 hour viewing and test drive before parting with cash.

 

You're right , the US has some restrictions indeed ...

 

In 2010 I flew and drove my 1991 Hunter from Virginia to Chicago, great trip. I brought tools and picked up fluids before hitting the road. I also made sure my AAA membership was paid up.

In 2012, I flew and drove my 1983 Land Rover 110, from Maryland, to Roush Creek in PA attended Rovers on the Rocks, then on to Chicago. Same packing list as before.

Last year I drove to Michigan about 5 hours away and drove a free Discovery II back to Chicago, same packing list as before.


The best trip was the 1991 Hunter, I had just returned from a year long deployment overseas. The best way to truly appreciate all we have in America is to climb into a rover turn up the tunes and drive across it.

I'd do it again in heart beat.

 

Love that attitude. I've thought about doing this many times. Whatever happens, happens. It's all an adventure.

 

AR but you're an army guy and used to taking risks, me I'm a wimp and play safe to minimise risk ........................ apart from motorbike and car racing racing (old days), the biggest risk these days for me is crossing the highway particularly here Admittedly, nothing like having a breakdown card paid up and a lift and tow to hand at the end of a cellphone.

 

Seriously the worst that happens is you break down. You get a hotel order parts fix it and move on. Its a rover and adventure is what it is all about.
