This sounds like a cry for help. At least you have taken the first and most important step, which is admitting you have a problem.

It is possible that the mechanic was a rogue and the dealer doesn't know. "Fix this ABS thing." "Okay." Disconnects light; doesn't tell anyone." "You're the hero!".

I'll be searching for the answer to that over the next day or so. I have to replace the Panhard bushings and was planning on having some wrench time this week anyways.

They are an Indie dealer and repair shop. They did the repair on site. It's a pretty small operation.

THEN THEY SUCK. Then they are really OUTRAGEOUS. I suck for making a stab at defending them.

If in Texas and it was me, I would contact the BBB and sue them in small claims court. Having undertaken to do the repair, they had an obligation to complete it in a good and workmanlike manner. Further, there is probably a federal regulation on disabling warning lights for federally-mandated safety devices. There are probably state statutes regarding the same.

Do I sound like a lawyer? That's because I am! I am seriously outraged by what they did, on behalf of the OP and also out of fear that someone would do it to me.

This is one of the reasons (in addition to be inquisitive and CHEAP) that I do all of my own repairs. And guess what? My three amigos are lit... and I would NEVER, EVER disable the lights, even on my own truck. Really shocking.

It defo sounds like you've been stitched. My enduring attitude is 'never trust used car salemen or politicians' they are endemic liars. There seems that there's nothing much you can do apart from bad publicity as when like most things in life 'get it in writing, verbal promises are worthless in court'.

As for ABS, it's not an essential braking addition but can be useful bearing in mind there is cadence braking to those used to it. Problem here is that there MAY be an intrinsic fault in the ABS modulator or system which can impede the brake efficiency generally. As for the children scenario, forget it, it's not entering their mindset and indeed it shouldn't when flogging cars and it holds no water legally but only morally, BUT, these aren't moralistic people you're dealing with.

Yesterday I thought of this thread because we had our first rain in a month and I skidded (at slow speed) about 75 feet at a red light.

At least I had the benefit of knowing that my ABS light was on.

Since I posted this on multiple forums, and the fact that us Land Rover folks seem to be a very tight knit community, word got back to them and I received a very long response on DiscoWeb explaining how sorry they were and although they accepted blame, it wasn't their fault because their on site mechanic was doing shady work and was eventually fired. I'm not 100% sure if I believe them. But, they did offer to fix my Disco.

I bought my LR3 from them and they treated me right. My A/C wasn't blowing cold and they said they would make sure it did. They ended up having to install a new A/C compressor. I was getting wet floors and they unstopped the moon roof drains so my interaction with them was good.

I'm not going to take a position one way or another on your situation as that's between you and them.

However, based on my experience with them I would give them a chance to make things right. If they don't well that would be a whole other story.
