I'm glad my government is spending countless dollars tracking down these illegal vehicles over doing anything productive. Good job america.

That is a wasteful boast of power that is troublesome and costly in so many more ways than it is saving all Americans from the hazards of emissions and safety violations. Yikes
! I wish the U.S. Gov't could please stop saving me from myself and my free-will choices...which might not always be correct, but I seem to manage just fine
.
That photo really breaks my heart
. I've wanted one of these vehicles for so long, but purchasing a used old one is so hard to trust with the rust (well-hidden and covered as it might be
) and repairs/maintenance/parts. The dealers list them for like $40,000 on their lots, all shiny and clean, but no warranty at all
. Imagine how far you'd get pulling off the dealer lot before it breaks down...LOL.
When I have some time, I'm gonna look into any politicians that would support Americans being able to buy, drive, maintain, and repair whatever vehicles they want, particularly for occasional or leisure-driving (such as off-roading) or for work needs (such as farming). Maybe there is a way to legally get a few Defenders into the U.S.? I'm so clueless on this that I really have no idea of the factual background information.
If emissions is the real problem, then have a brilliant American MechE design, develop, and install a device on the vehicle that counts the mileage that is driven over a given period of time and measures emissions, and if I reach or exceed an established limit for emissions, issue me a monetary fine or prohibit me from passing the next inspection, until I perform some community service or make a monetary contribution to saving the environment. I don't know
. Emissions is dependent not only on the vehicle, but how often and where (city traffic jams or rural country) it is driven. Banning the Defender completely makes no logical sense...IMO, of course
.
I'm not trying to disrespect the environment, but I probably have more trees on my land than most people in the U.S. with perfectly manicured lawns that use gas mowers and leaf blowers constantly. How about a mass execution of stupid leaf blowers that just blow the debris, but never pick it up, and stink up the air with gas fumes? LOL.
Well, that's my soapbox rant. Time to look into politicians' platforms. Maybe look into political support for the Right to Repair Act, as well...

Portion signed and I'll forward it to my local network etc
It is very sad. I view a vehicle as a machine an ultimately a piece of art . To destroy them like this is such a shame. And I won't sit for it. Hopefully we can get some change going on.

If the evidence is destroyed, can the gov't still prove that an illegal or unlawful act took place
?

I can build my own boat, and get it registered. I can also get one registered that has the hull ID damaged.
I can build my own boat trailer and get a tag for it. I can also get a tag for one that the ID tag has peeled off in salt water.
I can build my own hot rod out of pieces of other cars and get a tag for it. There are forms and rules for all of this.
Surely there is some legal way to import this scrap machine. In days past, Rover actually shipped Defenders in crates around the world as "CKD" or complete knocked down. Final assembly was in the destination country. Maybe pull the fenders off and ship them in another box.

Yep, it is the USA, and we elected the people who passed the legislation, appointed the heads of agencies, and supervised the writing of regulations.
Normally, "carve outs" are matched by significant campaign donations. Rover may not have supported the right politicians.
I think I'll pose as a politician this Halloween. That way I can take half of the candy from kids who come by, and give it to the other ones too lazy to trick or treat.
