Technically not a Darwin Award because the guy lived. But a bunch of dumbasses nonetheless.
Didn't Mythbusters do something like this once?

Dont think i've seen the mythbusters one if they did. However, i've seen more than my fair share of flying shackles, hooks, and bumper pieces. I always keep clear of an extraction. You get hit in the head with one of those you're getting coloring books for christmas the rest of your life.

Mythbusters did do a cable snap thing, they used a pig carcass and a 10,000lb cable, snapped it, it hurt the pig bad but did not cut it in half.
They did say that you would be very lucky to be alive though.

There is a video floating around of one, maybe two, bystanders killed when ****** recovery gear broke and some off-road event.

When I drove truck I got stuck and the first tow truck they sent was to small, he tried anyway.
His front end was off the ground, his boom was bending, then his cable snapped, it was a 20,000lb cable.
He had a remote for the winch, we were both standing way back, it was cool and scary at the same time.
