long time D2 owner, just bought a 1994 Ranger rover for $250.00. Yup...got it home just playing around. She turns over but won't start. I'm not hearing a fuel pump before start up... "like my disco". Should I be hearing that fuel pump buzz before start? That'll be my 1st plan of attack. Guessing it's in the gas tank same as my D2?

 

Yes, if the fuel pump is getting power then you should hear a "buzzing" sound like your D2.
With someone turning the key, you should also be able to hold the fuel hose pre or post filter and feel it pressurize.
And yes, the pump does live in the tank like the D2, but before you pull it....

Remove the access panel in the boot and check the connector for both condition and voltage.
Also check the Fuel Pump Relay and Fuse. I've had more than a few RRC's that had a bad fuel pump relay.

Great info, thanks for the input. While i've got your attention I was able to find the little error code display but I'm not seeing any numbers when I turn the key. does the engine need to run for a certain amount of time to produce the numbers? I turn the key and just see the little black box but nothing lighting up. Thanks a million!

 

Ha, also just figured out this is actually a 1990...well at least thats what the registration says. Can't find the vin

 

Re: The OBD Display, the numbers/codes will only show with the ignition ON, AND when there is a fault. If you want to test to see if it's working.....

Do this if you have The Security CODE for the RADIO!

All you need to do is disconnect the battery for a few minutes, reconnect... and the OBD Display should read " 02 ".
That code means there was an interruption of power to the ECU. This code (unlike the others) will clear once you turn the key to position 2.
IF the " 02 " doesn't show up then the OBD Display Unit, or connection to it could be faulty.

You can also look on the decal on the drivers door, and there's a plate under the bonnet on the rad support.

My 88 Classic had a Ford pump mounted on right rear frame inside wheel arch and plumbed in. Did not like it, but easy to replace.

 

Listen for the sound of the fuel pump relay click. I would start there before pulling the pump. It's one of the two metal Bosch relays mounted on the outer wall of the passenger footwell.
