Default Need some help with fuel pump

Hi all,

First time delving into fuel pump issues after 190k. Started with my son calling me a saying the truck stopped running while he was driving. He said he got it restarted and ran for a second then died again. Now it just cranks but no start. First thought was crankshaft position sensor so I picked one up and put it in. Nope. I have spark but it seeems weak, but it’s there. So here is what I have done so far:

Got access to fuel pump and checked to see if it was running when the key was turned to acc. Unless it’s a whisper and I have to have my ear on top of it, I don’t hear anything.
  • Checked the fuse...good
  • Checked the relay between 30 and 87...11.84 volts (might be low because of all the cranking). Relay clicks
  • Checked the white and purple wire at the pump...nothing with key off, key on, cranking
  • One of the thin wires running to the pump has 5v
  • Checked inertia switch and jumped the connections...no start and no power to white and purple wire
So I am not sure what would keep power from getting to the fuel pump. I did read about the white and purple wire running through a security spider thing, but that was a D1. Would that apply to a D2?

Would really appreciate and help with this or any other ideas why it won’t start.

Thanks,
Jamie

Well,
Acc doesn't prime the pump, ign position does, so turn that key but a little further and listen for the priming sound. (Least I can't imagine why acc position would prime)
Furthermore, perhaps the pump is just simply burnt out but IS getting power?

If you do not hear it prime when you turn the key as far as you can without starting it.... do this:

Have someone else turn the key as far as you can without starting it, when they do quickly bang a few hard times rapidly on the bottom of the fuel tank right where the pump is. This very often will help the fuel pump to get going. It only tries for a couple seconds so if it doesn't work, try it a few more times. If this works, your fuel pump is on its way out and is now unreliable. I did this trick on my durango a few times, enough to get to the store and pickup parts and such and replace it. On the durango, there's a ring in the middle of the tank which indicates where the pump is and let me know where to give it a few hard wacks, I was not gentle! I'm not sure if the Disco has a ring or where exactly the pump sits, might have to do some searching.

It's worth trying

Thanks, I'll give it shot.

I meant to say the ignition was on, not acc.

I thought you probably meant that since you seemed knowledgeable enough to rest relays and such but to play it safe, I figured I'd point it out, I've done silly things before no doubt.

Keep us updated if you will!

I recovered the relay and jumped the connections for the fuel pump and it runs. Didn't hear anything different from the fuel pump when I turned the key on but it was already running. Also rechecked spark and it's good. It still won't start though. I'll replace the relay and see what happens tomorrow.

Well, we're at least on track here. Fuel pump is good, look for 12v working your way from the pump towards the ignition. Nice that you have ruled something out now.

Default Update: not fuel pump

So I checked for pressure at the rail and it was there. Turned the key and cranked it again, rechecked pressure and it was there again.

started thinking about what else it could be and looked at the weak spark. Did a search and found this:
https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...r-93088/page4/

im thinking this may be the issue. I remember I had to install some exterior fuses for the rear ac and something else because of issues with the fuse box. Not sure what part of the fuse box would cause this, but I can’t think of anything else. Is there a procedure that needs to be completed after replacement or is it just a change out?

Default Solved

Long story short, it was the fuse box inside drivers side.

Check out solution here: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...14/#post699583

Thanks for the help!
