Can't use chains on my 20" wheels! What to do?
Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is a stupid question but this is my first 4WD car and I haven't driven much in the snow.
My 2009 L322 Autobiography has OEM 20" wheels. I figured it may be a good idea to have chains in the the car just in case they're needed.
I've been searching around and it seems that for this car chains should be fitted to the rear wheels and cannot be fitted to the 20" wheels. The owners manual even says that if I need to use chains, I need to install the 19" wheels.
So, am I stuck (figuratively, not literally)? I believe I've heard that sometimes, even with 4WD, chains may be required to continue on some roads.
Does anyone know if there are any brands/models that would work safely on my RR? Any suggestions?
If it makes any difference I have Yokohama Geolandar CV G058 255/50 R20 109 Y- All terrain sport tires. They're what was on the car when I bought it a couple of months ago and are nearly new.
Thanks!
Larry.

When I lived in CA every vehicle had to have chains in it during the winter, I don't know if it's still that way but at the chain up spots on I80 and US 50 they would check that 4x4's had them or they wouldn't let you continue. I've seen a bunch of pictures of our L322's with chains on the front and that's the usual place to put them on a 4x4 not the rear. I would think that if you keep it in off road height you would be fine but that does limit you to 30mph or less. There are plenty of low profile options that ought to work, maybe see if Thule still makes them because theirs were really cool (but expensive).
