Coolant leak on tranny
Hi there,
I recently started to have coolant, (yes, coolant) dripping from a small black part on the side of my transmission on my 2003 Range Rover HSE with just over 185,000 miles. The manual says the part is called the "gearbox fluid cooler". It is a very easily removable part, looks like a switch or solenoid, and has a single electrical connection and one screw that mounts it to the tranny. When I removed it there was just an empty hole in the tranny where it pops in. I checked very carefully to see if the coolant was coming form any place else and I found nothing. No signs of coolant leaking elsewhere from above, and I really don't think it is coming down the wire connection either as it is a very thin connector. I am going to double check this to be sure but did not see anything from above or when I was underneath except from the "gearbox fluid cooler". Another issue I am having with the cooling system is a code saying the connection with the ECT, engine coolant temp sensor has been intermittent so I actually bought a new switch to replace. However, when I looked at what I think is the ECT (next to the upper radiator hose on the manifold) it is different. Just checked with Atlantic British and it is the right part. Further research led me to the switch that is in the bottom radiator hose connector-the plastic part that is connected to the radiator. When I went to remove the wiring connector, the wiring broke away from the connector. I am figuring that is why I was getting the message for intermittent connection. But now I am confuse, are their two ECTs on this model? So I pulled the switch after draining the coolant and it did not look like the part I bought. It had two fine wires on the end, sort of what the MAF sensor wires look like. I don't know if there is a casing for those wires that stuck in the plastic portion of the lower radiator hose or what? But other than not having the gold "endpin" of the part I bought, it looked the same.
So as you can tell, a lot going on here, very confusing for me and i am hoping that someone can shed some light on all this? The good news is that the vehicle does not over heat, but I keep the coolant topped up. But I cannot even find the part I described from the transmission anywhere online. Help!!
