Default Used 2008 Range Rover for daughter

Well, we are finally having to put to rest my daughters Disco II, cracked block (RIP LiL Jax)

So now looking at some L322, LR3s and LR4s. I have no experience with L322 Range Rovers.

Can I get some help about what I should look for and most importantly, what I should look out for.

Thanks

With the L322 the big thing to me is to get the Jaguar 4.4. Other than that all the usual stuff with service history and pull codes with a gap tool or similar to see what lurks. These can have tons of codes stored but no lights on the dash. Most are just ghosts in the system.

I am a big fan of the LR3 and I wasn’t before to be honest but having two of them now they are pretty good trucks. Reliable and easy to work on.

LR4 is a LR3 with a lest robust motor in the 5.0, same for the L322 with the 5.0

Agree about the LR3. Got on for my son. Been great other than pesky 0171 and 0174 codes that have been driving me nutz

thanks for the advice

What do you mean by “lest robust” when referring to the LR4 and L322

The 5.0 in comparison to the 4.4 is not as durable of a motor.

I have a few trains of thought on why that is.

I think the extended service intervals 15k oil changes lead to a lot of the problems with oiling and timing components. Timing failure in this motor is the kiss of death.

Also when it comes to an overheat they are a one and done motor. If you overheat these either the block, heads or both will be gone beyond saving and are costly to replace.

Then there is the high pressure fuel pump that likes to go out that the part is over a grand.....

That being said I still like the two trucks and would own one but I think going in eyes wide open is important with the 5.0. I like the no nonsense 300 hp Jag 4.4. I have done horrible, unspeakable things to mine and it is smooth and happy.

I've seen the 5.0 go for 300k miles and not need timing gear, due to short oil intervals. I've also seen them go for another 50k miles WITH timing rattle, and be fine. But that runs the risk of the engine jumping timing, scary thoughts. Biggest problem with the 5.0 IMO is the ghost failure of the water pump. No warning signs, they just go. Replace them 30-40k miles as maintenance and never worry about needing heads or a new block.

You can't have the heads machined, replacement only.

I've yet to see a high pressure fuel pump go out with normal use of either BP premium or Shell V-power along with BG44k used every few months.

If your daughter doesn't care about 510HP, but wants some 400HP, go for the 4.2 SC. Reliable engine and I've never seen one of those superchargers fail. If she doesn't care about HP at all, go for the 4.4 and be done with it.
