I am on a quest to find a better coil spring package for the P38. My experience is that there is no 'really great' solution, only 'good enough'. The suspect reliability of the EAS system, which is VERY nice when functioning, forces owners into 'bad or worse' decisions.
If anyone has experience, please add it here.
The data points that I would like to have in order to begin estimating what springs to use are...
- what is the compressed spring height of a stock P38 on air? the distance from the spring base where the 'D' shaped tab goes through the perch to where the spring touches the body.
- The height of the wheel wells at standard height (the 'stance' of the vehicle)
- The weight of the unsprung parts of the drive train... wheels, brakes, axles, axle tube, diff, radius arms (front) and trailing arms (rear). This will help inform the 'sprung' weight at each corner that a coil spring will need to support
Any help, ideas, measurements is welcome.
I'm sure we will get some commentary like 'just fix the EAS properly'. I failed at that. I could not get it to a place that was totally reliable.
I had stock airbags leaking and replaced with Arnott Gen 3. I kept them through a pump replacement, then multiple height sensors, then air lines... I finally went to coils when I knew I was going to sell it to a less mechanically inclined acquaintance and he was concerned about the suspension. I went med duty OME springs which raised it about 2". I know I have pictures with the Arnott springs on it, and I'm sure I have pictures with the coils (but will have to find). I will try to post pictures over the next few days if you're interested.
Well, I found a picture after the coils were replaced, but before the new tires were mounted. I believe the tires were 29" at the time of the picture and were being replaced with a 31.5" or so tire. The gap in the wheel arches was huge before the new tires, but after it looked a lot better. FYI, it is sitting on a slight hill, so it isn't actually sitting high in the front. I think I took the picture to show the customer that it wouldn't look right without new tires, but he was happy knowing he would be running a significantly taller tire than what was in the picture. All I can tell you is that he thought the Rover was great and was still running it years later when I lost track of him. The only pictures I can find with the Arnott springs is when it was turned off and in the lowest position, so there isn't any comparison to be made. I thought I had before and after pictures for the customer, but it's been so long I can't find them.
