Started up my '97 Range Rover P38 today and put it in reverse (automatic transmission) to back out of my drive - the car started to subtly shudder and I immediately knew something was wrong. When I put my foot on my accelerator the engine revved but there was very little power. Parked it, restarted it and the problem was gone. A couple of hours later, moving it from a parking spot, it did it again, except this time when I put it in reverse the shuddering was more violent and pronounced. It does not happen in drive and at all, just reverse. At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, it seems as if when I put it into reverse the car is just rejecting it (the best way I can explain it, apologies in advance).

Typically I try and do quick fixes myself, but any suspected problems with the transmission and or gearbox are outside of my wheelhouse. Taking it to the shop on Tuesday, but just wanted to know what I should expect. Any opinions and or advice on a possible diagnosis would be much appreciated.

 

I'm not up on this either but if it were mine I'd start looking at shift linkage adjustment. The transmission is virtually the same as the Disco, so try posting in the Disco section of the forum. You will have more people looking at your post there.
