Default Motor won’t go over 4,000rpms on highway w/smoke out the back

Hey everyone,

Really have an issue, purchased used.

When I drive the truck it has a rough idle on startup, after it drives fine but will not accelerate past 4000 rpms. If I take it up to 4000 the truck violently sputters and a huge plume of white smoke begins to emit out the exhaust. Enough white smoke to fill a room!

if I drop back down under 3500-4000rpms it drives excellent!

freaking out because it’s not throwing codes and I don’t really want to take it to the dealer.

Dustin M

This is at 3pm in the afternoon.

I would start with the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor and Positive Crank Case Vent (PCV) if it smells oily or like fuel. If you haven't done a tune up its a good time for that too with new spark plugs and air filter.

If the smoke smells sweet it most likely is a head gasket leak, indicated by a higher than normal reading on your engine oil dipstick and or milky looking residue under the oil filler cap
