Default Range Rover Sport HST 2016 Engine Failure Connecting Rod Piston

Hi everyone, we just received some truly shocking news! Our beloved Range Rover Sport 2016 HST, with only 95,000 KM on the odometer, needs a new engine. The most frustrating part is that Land Rover refuses to cover any of the costs, leaving us with an estimated expense of around $40,000. Can you believe it? We were assured that it wasn't due to any fault of our own, but rather an internal failure. Apparently, the connecting rod caused the piston to dislodge, resulting in severe damage to the cylinders. To add insult to injury, the car had recently undergone a thorough check-up at the dealer. We have always diligently maintained it, with timely oil changes and no accidents. Has anyone else faced a similar situation with their Range Rover or any other vehicle? We would greatly appreciate any advice or insights you can provide. Thank you in advance! 🙏🚗

Same thing happened to me. This is my first post but I wanted you to know you aren't alone. I own 4 Land Rovers. 3 RRS and 1 Evoque. I bought my 2015 RRS used with 51,880 miles on it and rarely drove it over the three year period it was in service (1 of those years I was deployed). Upon starting it one day the engine started making a knocking noise. I had changed the oil every 7500 miles and had just changed the oil 3 weeks prior to the engine knocking fearing for the worst I called RR North America. They told me to have it towed to the dealership. At first they were very nice and seemed like they wanted to help but that quickly changed after it was towed to the dealership. My car has been sitting at the Land Rover dealership for 9 months now. Range Rover North America basically told me they were not going to replace the engine after 5 months of emails and not returning my calls. They said it was out of warrantyThey wouldn't even tell me what was wrong with it after back and forth calls. The dealership said they had not received authorization to even look at it but would continue to email North America for approval and next steps. For the past month I emailed and called my service representative every other day, left messages, finally last week I drove to the dealership and stood in front of him. I asked where the car was and that I would pay for them to do a compression check etc to assess what's wrong with the engine. He said to me "Didn't you pick that car up". No, Ive been emailing you and calling every other day and asking if we could move forward with a diagnostic. He said "Let me see where the car is", Wait you don't know where the car is? No answer he went into the back office came back out and said we don't have the keys so we may have had it towed. So he started calling tow companies who told him that they didn't have it. He then panicked and asked several of the mechanics to walk the lot. Finally after an hour they were able to locate it. The mechanic took me to where it was, it looked bad. I mean the A pillars were faded and it was weathered and it there was damage to the front bumper. I was pissed but I was calm and told them what I saw. I asked them to do the compression test and we would figure the rest out later. He said he would check the car in the next day after they found the key. I asked him to email me with an estimate so I would have the paperwork. He said he would email me. A day went by and then the next. I called and left a message and then called again on the third day. He said they had been busy but he would send it later. He eventually sent it and the recommend service as we agreed upon was a compression test/pressure test... for $1,410.00. WTH. At this point I was like whatever because I needed to know what was wrong, from a Land Rover dealership. After three days I finally received another link this time it was to approve services 1. Engine Rebuild/replace: failed piston rod bearings/engine overheat $21,861.08 2. Brake job because of excessive corrosion, well no sh*t its been sitting there for 9 months Front $1,984.76 , Rear $1,615.33 3. Dead Battery -$611. I emailed on Thursday but I haven't heard back from them. I owe $12k on the car and would be looking to buy an engine from TAPAS out of California for around 11k ( I strong recommend them. The owner is super nice and helpful and they know what they are doing) and it would cost around another 7k to put in or I can just see how much I can trade it for. It really irks me to no end to read posts like yours and others where there is a clear problem with piston rods etc. I think the thing that ticks me off the most is when I asked the RR NA rep how long a Ranger Rover engine should last after him repeating to me over and over that its a luxury vehicle I asked him how long should a luxury vehicles engine last and he tried to talk all over me, I repeated it several times and he said 50K miles. 50K miles. Even Hyundai gives you a 100k warranty on its non luxury vehicle. Also we had previously fixed the O2 Sensor, the fuel pump, the compressor for the suspension and a few other things. Some people would say that's the price of owning a luxury car and I would say BS. If you own a luxury car then it should last not break down every 20K miles or blow an engine. That's what happens to cheap cars so what does that say about Land Rovers? With a ll that said I still like the luxury feel of the Land Rover, my 2006 RRs' are still going strong with an oil change every 5k miles. The 2016 Evoque has a number of problems too numerous to name. Check out TAPAS engines on eBay or their website. Can't say enough about them. I just need to decide what I want to do now. Either way it's going to be costly, engine replacement at the dealership, out inn California with Tapas or trade it in.

I have had to replace a few engines in 14 and up trucks. It is always timing chain related. The piston snaps a valve off and the engine self destructs. There are many options to replace the engine way cheaper than 40k. The last one I did was non supercharged and ran the customer 12k parts and labor. He was thrilled. Consider shipping the car to me to have the engine replaced, shipping the car is easy and cheap and you'll save yourself a lot of money.

Same thing happened with our 2016 td6, which had 70k miles or so. Well maintained, serviced by dealer, etc. Curious if this rod shearing issue is something endemic to the vehicle.

We're currently dealing with this now, although the cause is unknown - 2014 RR Sport V8 Supercharged 149k miles, engine seized. Still at dealership who quoted us $51,500 to replace the engine! It's had regular yearly maintenance done at the dealer, and no warning lights of any kind ever came on. Zero accountability from the dealer and Land Rover... I've never known anyone to have a car that just died and is now basically scrap metal. Especially one you paid $80k for.. The more I research, the more I see this happening often with Land Rovers.

We had the same thing happen in February. 2018 Discovery, diesel. %1,200 well cared for miles. No help from LR.
