Default multiple oxygen sensor failures within first 5 yrs

Has anyone had multiple oxygen sensor failures? Check engine codes P0173 and P0170

I've now had 4. The first three were all Sensor 3 on banks 1 and 2. The most recent time was the 2nd time the car set a code for bank 2. We are up to 2 times for each bank.

The first 3 times for oxygen sensor 'failure' issues the car was under warranty. JLR replaced the sensor and reset the code with no troubleshooting; they only follow their written instructions despite requests for them to find the root cause.

This 4th time the car was out of warranty and the dealer was going to charge for diagnosing the problem. They'd told me last time the O2 sensors are now under a lifetime warranty. Turns out JLR only put the lifetime warranty on the oxygen sensors after the NTSB took notice and it was only for Velars up to 2017 model year. JLR didn't list the oxygen sensors as a key part for CA Emissions Warranty. Which is slimy, but not a surprise.

The service dept at the dealer didn't get around to the car for over 28 hours after the appointment began. I pulled the car and took it to my reliable, responsible, communicative, collaborative mechanic of many decades.

My mechanic checked for exhaust and intake system leaks. None. Thanks to all of you on the forum, I knew for him to check that none of the wires were on the exhaust. Nope.

He cleared the code via OBDII unit and drove the car for 20 min on the highway. After the engine cooled completely, he drove the car for 20 min on the highway a second time. When I asked him to, he pulled the sensor, and checked for pin and corrosion issues (thanks again forum people!). No pin seating or corrosion issues. He cleaned the connectors anyway and applied Stabilant 22 to the connectors. As a bonus, all this cost much less than the hourly rate at the dealer.

The car has been driven well over 110 miles since the code was cleared. The code has not recurred. If there is a real issue w/ the exhaust system, the car will throw the code again. I'll check the code w/ the OBDII unit, reset it, and see if it happens again.

We are thinking this might be a JLR software or firmware issue that happens after a certain # of miles. The approximate mileages at which the sensor codes triggered were 3.5k (bank 2), 4.6k (bank 1), 10.8k (bank 2), and 13k (bank 1)

The dealer procedure is to replace the sensors and clear the code. The sensors probably did not need to be replaced. The 'problem' probably went away because the cleared the code(s).

Anyone else have this same experience on a car with well under 100k miles? Anyone tried to reset the code and see if it'll reoccur? Anyone notice a pattern with when the codes are triggered?
