OM617 powered Disco I
I posted on this for my friend Jason some time ago. He put all of the work and money into an OM617 powered Discovery I (1995, if memory serves), and drove it from California west, carrying his own fuel, parts, and tools in a trailer, and had a horrible incident in Tennessee. The head gasket blew because, apparently, some of the fuel had water in it and he was left stranded in Monteagle, TN.
Jason made it to a truck stop but the parking lot was monitored and his Disco was towed. To make things worse, he still only had the application for title, from Florida (where he'd just left to move to California a short time before). He had to leave his beloved project in Monteagle. He knew I wanted an OM617 powered Disco and was hot on the trail of parts, so he offered it to me for the towing fee and a small amount of money. Unfortunately, the only reason I can even consider buying things like that is that I work all of the time, and I couldn't get away with a car carrier to
pick it up. I thought the story ended there.
Jason is a real mechanical genius. He is also a nice guy. He literally offered to come to my house from FLORIDA to put an OM617 into my Disco II.
I managed to wave at him as his bus passed through my home town of Longview, TX on his way back to California.
The Disco needs work on the OM617 or a simple swap with another. The clutch, bellhousing adapter, flywheel, pedals, fuel pump, and everything else has been worked out and was in operation until the problem occurred. It has an R380 (5 speed) transmission. The interior is a little rough but it would make a great project for anyone who likes the old mercedes engines. It has some parts in it, including an extra IP and alternator. The only reason I am not buying it is that I have dumped a huge (thousands) mount in my Rover in the past couple of weeks, and my driveway and garage are packed with vehicles.
Oh, He got the clear title yesterday! So the truck is in Monteagle, Jason is in California, and the price is up to him (but it is less than the cost of an R380, based on my research), pluss 100 dollars to the kind man who towed and stored it.
I will add some pictures in a moment.
This is not my truck, I have nothing to gain by the sale, and you'll need to get all details from Jason. If anyone is interested, PM me and I'll give you his number. This really is an opportunity, and I am sick that I can't hop on it. He needs to sell it quick because he has an eye on his next diesel conversion project.
Best,
Charlie V

1. The glow plug switch has changed to a rover windo switch that is intermittent. No more forgetting glow plugs on. 😀
2. The fuel cut off has chainged to a key switched constant duty vacuum valve solenoid so fuel delivery stops when 12 volts are not present.
And yes title is in hand and clean of any liens. Wire transfer only or overnight cashiers bank check as i am in California. Thanks.
