Is this how we post on this thread? 200,000 208 HSE. Had since 86,000. Only issues/expense; Changed the airbags, Renewed oil in trans; replaced suspension air compressor, and all hoses. Other than that, all pretty much original and drives and sounds like new. Wish I could replace the fronts thou!

Default My > 200,000 mile defender.

So, I know what you are thinking "he is a cheat, that is 189,000 miles!). Well read on.....

This is my 200tdi 1993 Defender county station wagon. I have had it for just over 20 years and for most of that time it has been my daily drive, it has also been used for (and the reason we bought it) for many overland camping and touring trips. Europe, Eastern europe and Africa as well as many around UK. It was also used a great deal for off road/green laning. Currently (the past two years) she has become my second car and as such is only used about 2 days a week, such as today. This is her right now outside my office.
The engine is the original 200tdi, which in the time I have had the car, has never been out. I have taken the head off twice - at 100,000 miles and again at 200,000 miles, both precautionary, simply to replace the head gasket, on the second one I also had the head skimmed.
It is on its third gearbox, second tranfer box and second rear axle (although I only changed it to upgrade to disk brakes)
Only half of the chassis is original and all of the doors have been replaced.
It is on its third front bumper.
The seats and carpets are original, although the rear benches I took out and are being stored.

Four years ago I replaced the bulkhead and I found a very nice one from a TD5 which came complete with everything that attaches to the bulkhead (except doors, roof, wings and chassis) In doing this I decided to use the TD5 bits, so it now has TD5 dash and electrics (I rewired to rest of the car as part of this). So this is why the odometer is displaying less than 200,00.

The old one, when I took it off had over 200,000 miles on the clock, and it was short by about 30,000 miles (my stimate) because of two periods where the speedo cable had broken, and I was slow to replace. So I think the car has done about 250,000.

The engine is superb, it still runs as well as it did when I first got it, it uses almost no oil and pulls like a train. I have done most of the work on the car myself and all the servicing, I used a garage to change one of the gearboxes and a garage for each of the chassis repairs (cross member, rear quarter, rear half), other than that it was all me. I average about 31mpg, which I think is pretty respectable for a machine of this weight and aerodynamics.

It will need a whole new chassis at some point, maybe about three years from now, so have a constant search out on ebay for a suitable candidate, but there is no rush.

Thats about it
