So I am about to embark on a trip that will take me to a good portion of our nations most iconic National Parks. It will encompass some 5500 miles over a proposed month, to month and a half time frame passing through 12 different states.

Why do I tell you this? Well i am by no means a stranger to cross country travel, and all the snafus that can come with it. I have broken pullies on freeways in Southern California, broke and axle in the south of Missouri. Hell I've even been even lucky enough to have the most fortunate unseen prolonged stay in a wonderful indian town off the i40 due to a blown transmission... Good times... Anyhow, I tell you all this because it will all be done in my 2001 Disco II... and I leave in under week!!!

So I come to you with this one seemingly simple question... If you were I what would your automotive preparations entail for such an adventure?

Things I've done so far:

oil change with stabilizer
front brakes / turned rotors
lube grease fittings
new tiers
changed spark plugs
new intake manifold gasket / upper and lower
air filter
bled brake lines

I still have a check engine light, and the 3 amigos shinning, (not too worried about them, I mean... they have been there off and on since I bought the thing, and I just don't know how to fix them) but really it's the check engine light that's bugging me the most.

What's the stabilizer with the oil change?

 

I would be concerned too with a CEL on less than a week out from a big trip. You need to get the code read so you can diagnose and fix it. Also change the differential and Transfercase gear oil.

 

Not sure what the rules on links are here, but here it is... I have always used it in my vehicles and yah... I'm sure some would say its pointless, but i like it anyhow. Peace of mind can go a long way when your stressing about other things. You know?

You know I have been meaning to do this, but where I live there are only 2 mechanics who have the scanners to read LR codes, and you got to catch them when they are there. It seems that they really don't like to work much, at leas not when I'm driving by.

IDK, maybe the muffler guy knows how to get hold of one of them... :P

 

I would suggest you pressure test your cooling system before you leave.

 

The cel light will most likely be a more generic code, many scanners will be able to read it. Defiantly should look into seeing whats up with that before you leave.
It would be a good idea to get something like an ultra gauge/scanguage to read your cel codes, and also to monitor things like coolant temp, voltage...etc


Also, I like to have a spare key secured somewhere discrete under the truck. Just so you don't have to worry about being locked out and stranded because of missing keys.

 

Not sure where toy live(you should update your Location info) but anybody can read D2 Land Rover codes. I have a $50 scanner from PepBoys and it can read pretty much any make/model codes and clear them. Places like PepBoys and AutoZone will read your codes for free.
Personally, I wouldn't embark on such a trip without owning something that can read/clear codes. I bring my scanner with me on all my trips.
I applauded you for daring to take on such a large trip but to be honest it seems like you're fairly ill prepared to do so.

 

Oh good idea! I really don't know why i didn't think about doing this, I even bought some of that block sealer stuff and was considering using it ''just in case'', but the idea of getting it tested just never crossed my mind... Thank you for the advice kind sir
