Default S2A Leaking diff cover

My '70 S2A has a leaky rear diff cover. My mechanic says he can grind off the rust and fill cover the diff cover with JB Weld epoxy. I have had good luck with the stuff but I'd like to hear what fellow Series Rover owners think. ????

Is your mechanic suggesting there is rust on the mating surfaces of the cover and the diff housing itself? That's a very odd place for rust to form unless the unit was left disassembled for years. If indeed the mating surfaces have pitted due to rust, I have no issue with using JB Weld as a skim coat to fill the pits, then file it back down smooth before using a regular gasket and gasket sealer. I've done this on a water neck that had pitted mating surfaces. The way you've written your post however, I have this sinking feeling that you or your mechanic is considering JB Weld to glue the cover in place... if that's what's being suggested, you need to get another mechanic... FAST!

Drivers side diff cover is leaking. This is a M6. Can I drain, pull axle and remove cover without droping the carriage and disconecting the trans ? Looks like it is possible except for one trans bolt thru the cover. Will I be able to pry the cover away from the rear and then slide in back ? And then reverse the process with gasket sealer or new gasket ?

What kind of car are you talking about? I think you’re in the wrong forum
