I prefer the badger mauling technique.
I too used to cut the cases open but have a better technique.
open key blade, insert pry tool or wide tip screwdriver into recess behind blade and pry the 2 halves apart. Be sure to only insert the pry tool just far enough to get a bite. At the end of the cavity inside the case is the immobilizer chip. If you pry too deep and violently the case can open and the tool slip, knocking loose the chip. I have never done it been been told that some have.
Immobilizer chip is the charcoal colored rectangle on the thin tip of PCB assembly.

I bought an IIDTool BT to program keys for my 2011 LR4, I started with 2 used keys off of ebay. I went through the steps to program the keys and both failed according to the IIDtool, but both now work to operate the car... And when I look at the list of keys the new ones show up. I am going to try a newer style 315Mhz key next. Does anyone know if there is a limit of how many keys can be programmed to the LR4?
