When I lived in Houston, TX you'd always see D1/D2's off Memorial Drive. You still maybe one or two that are mint because they're totally taken care of by the local LR dealership, but you mainly see LR3/LR4/RRS/RR's now.
In Beaumont, TX I was the only one with a Land Rover period minus one or two doctors that traveled from Houston. Now in my small town alone I know of at least 2 well kept D2's. One is a pretty stock looking 99-00 SD D2 & the other is a 99-02 SE lifted in Woodcote Green with a nice bumper/roof rack/lift. There was a pretty clean looking white SE D2 running around at the beginning of the summer with paper tags and a woman driving it. I wanted to stop and talk to her about changing out the thermostat to a 180F, and bypassing the throttle body heater plate, but sadly within a week I saw it parked at a local shop (probably a cooling, HG, or drive shaft/transmission problem) then I never saw it again...
I was on I-10 about 5 months ago and saw a mint condition D1 XD cruising down the freeway like it was 1997 lol. When I had my mint condition D1 I was totally the only one around with one.
LR's beat up get attention, that have been wheeled. LR's that are beat up and abused in stock form do not get attention IMHO. D1/D2's are unique in appearance/configuration and I have zero plans of thinning my LR fleet.

X1 ........... all of my trucks always have been 'stock' and extremely well maintained from the Pajero to the D2 (LR4). I am the eternal tinkerer with vehicles, they ain't pretty but they are clean and reliable.
My next job is to rebuild the engine on the Pajero SWB 2.8 TDi ready for some serious offroad/laning. The alu cylinder head has a small crack after having it tested and it blew out the head gasket but I have everything new I need to rebuild it from the bottom up but barring a new cylinder head. Problem is Pajero's are worthless if sold.
In southern Ontario where I live I see none on the road. My friend saw one the other day and snapped a picture just to prove it to me. Lol. I scout the internet for used discovery’s and parts and realize that Toronto and surrounding area seem to have a few. The road salt and long winters seem to rot them out. Most of the units I see are basically parts quality.
To me that makes a decent discovery worth that much more.
Had this truck for 3 years now that came from CT. Absolutely no rust so I decided to restore it and it runs like new now. Took me longer than expected but Im very happy with the results. Lots of headache and patience to get it back to shape.
Our ultra conservative guess it that 10% are still on the road. That would be roughly 11k.
My gut tells me that number is closer to 30%(33k),but for our purposes it’s best to underestimate as we always want the worst case scenario when analyzing the market place.
Then there is the ROW production numbers, which we are not counting.
I always laugh when we sell a door pin to the UK. In addition we have sold around 10 to Land Rover dealers in North America.
