I bought a 2001 Discovery 2 for $650. It started and sounded good. The seller made me aware it had a coolant leak and the 3 Amigos.

I owned a BMW before and felt comfortable working on the truck. It is not a daily driver, so I have time to piddle with it.

Started by replacing the coolant tank and water pump. The leak looks like it is coming from behind the water pump. I rented a pressure tester from advanced, but the leak is so bad it wouldn't build pressure. When I pour water in it pours right out.

After a lot of reading on here, I decided to do the timing cover gasket. Just finished with that. Well almost, the oil pan still needs to go back on.

Put all the hoses back, and added some water. It poured out again.

Any ideas?

 

ok.. so above the water pump there is a pipe that goes into the lower intake manifold.. there is a possibility that it is leaking. 3 10mm bolts go there.\


that's funny.. I also just bought a 2002 Disco for $650 and had to do the front cover job. It worked fortunately

 

 

 

Thanks redwhitekat. I've pulled the water pump 3 times already. Did the gasket first. Then bought a new pump and did it again. Then did it one more time when I did the timing cover gasket. I couldn't find all the bolts on the timing cover until I removed the water pump.

 

Although it is unlikely there are 2 nylon type hoses that go to the throttle body heater, they pass under the intake manifold if one is cracked or broken it could be the cause. You should be able to close them off on the right side of the engine bay to eliminate them as a cause. Number 7 & 8 in the diagram below.

 

 

So the back side of the head on the drivers side?

 

Looks like the front drivers side.
