Easily. You don't have to have a rim the same width as the tire. Actually, you do t even really need to stay within the tire companies recommendations. I've seen people squeeze 35x12.50s on 6.5" wide rims. Pretty good look, too, Imo.

The bolt spacing on many BMW wheels is the same, 5 X 120, so you're over the first hurdle. There are a variety of 16" BMW wheels in this size and there could be an aesthetic "fit" on a Discovery depending on one's taste. What will be important is the offset and the bore. Offset is the distance from the mounting face of the wheel to its centerline, and this will determine if the inner or outer edge of the wheel (and/or tire) will rub on anything. Both vehicles use hubcentric mounting and generally speaking the wheels from the 80s are 72.6mm bore. The most popular 16" wheels from this era will be 16X7.5 with a 20 or 24mm offset. I don't know what the D2 specs for their 16" wheels are but I suspect this is too narrow. BMW did put a 235 on a 16"X7.5" on the E31 8-series cars but it was a low profile tire with a 55 aspect ratio and not something I think you'd want to put 70 or 75s on, Forget 265s. The wheels from the early 90s cars start to get wider at 8" with the same bolt pattern and bore however the later 90s cars have a 74.1mm bore. As you move into the 2000s the wheels get wider and larger but are also more model-specific so there may not be as much opportunity for a cross. Here's a link to a great style and size reference database. If you know what the D2 requires perhaps you can find something that will work. There are lots of these 90s cars in junkyards (unlike the 80s cars) and the wheels are usually pretty cheap since most everyone wants 18 and up on BMWs these days. The styling will be a formidable obstacle in my opinion.

Why not the aftermarket black steel 16" D2 wheels?

Width has nothing to do with whether or not you want to get more sidewall on a given wheel width. Ie a 7.5" wheel with a 235/55 or a 235/85 isn't going to change how the wheel performs.

Now, a 265 width tire will fit perfectly fine on a 7" wheel. It's well within the recommended wheel width range. Any wheel that's 7-9" will be ok, anything more narrow or wider wouldn't be optimal, but could work depending on the tire itself. If you want 265/75 then 7-8" is where I'd go.

BMW E9x chassis cars all came with 16" wheel options. They'd be 7-7.5" in width, which is perfect for what you're looking for. realm.com is a good resource for finding what 16" wheels from BMW will have what offsets. That's the part that will matter, but can easily be fixed with hub centric spacers.

Just off the top of my head, style 156 would be ideal. Cheap, available and good looking. 16x7 et34. That would give you more room to your suspension, and would stick out only about 3/8". They're off 2006-2012 BMW 3 series sedan or wagon, 325 or 328.

Pretty much everything Twix has posted is incorrect. A 265 will not fit on a 7” wheel despite the claim “that’s where I’d go”. Don’t take my word for it however, here’s what Tire Rack has to say. Never mind the conjecture, from a factual perspective even the quoted website is wrong. realoem.com is the de facto know-all site for BMW part numbers (not realm.com) however any wheel offset inconsistencies you read about there CANNOT be fixed with hub centric spacers. The two are mutually exclusive and not even related to each other. 3 series wheels will likely be a poor fit, but then again 3 series guys usually march to the beat of their own drum anyway. Just be sure and do your research first.
