Best All-Terrain Tire?
Greetings All,
I just bought my first 2008 LR3 with 35,000 miles and I'm looking to replace my stock Contenential 255/55/R19 street tire with something that has an aggressive tread pattern. I plan to do some light/moderate off-roading here in Colorado, but my main focus is snow management. It's difficult to find anything in a 19" rim, but does anyone have any ideas?
I'm currently looking at:
BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO
Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac
Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar
Without any modifications, should I say with the current height/width? or maybe go a size wider or taller?
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Mike

Hey Mike,
Im new to the LR forum and am looking for tires for my newly bought LR2 HSE, I live in Vancouver BC Canada and dont get much snow on the ground out here but our mountains are filled with it and we love our skiing! Anyways Thought I would chime in to let you know what I found out because Im looking for the size. I have always like the Wrangler MT/R Kevlars but I know when I looked at them for my Jeep they were really the cats *** for off roading and rock crawling. I dont think the would be the best on the road as a daily driver, as for snow capabilities I would think they would do well in the deep stuff. I am thinking of running a winters all year round as the cost of having two sets of tires and swapping them off the rims each year would cost more than replacing winters sooner than say an all season. I have been looking at prellis. Not to many options though, like you said. I know the Nokian WR G2 Suv's are nice.
Also maybe look at the Perelli Scorpion ATRs nice off road tire.
Im finding it hard to sift throught the tire reviews there is a lot of positive and negative and no real clear winners out there.
Good luck. post which tires you get, I would be interested in what you choose.

19's are tough. The Cooper Zeon LTZ looks to be one of the more aggressive tires available in that size. I had a set on a company truck and they did pretty well in the snow. I never worked them off road other than job sites and on a beach so I couldn't vouch for their abilities on the trail but being a 55 series tire, they won't work that well on the trail anyway.
More options and cheaper in 18" ( but the rims will eat up any savings and then some; but you could sell the 19's on CL).
You want skinny tires for snow. Forum member bbyer (think it was him) got some 235's that reportedly worked very well.
255/60R18 Nitto Terra Grapplers would be good for off-roading but don't know about the snow

The LR3 came with 18's, maybe someone would be happy to trade with you. As for the Terra Grapplers in snow, I had a set of them on my P38 and they were awesome in the snow. I had to try like hell to get the traction control to kick on in the snow. They worked so well it was almost boring. It had to be a nasty day before I couold do doughnuts. Plus they worked well off road and didn't seem to wear at all. I think I miss them.
I have been reading up on the Cooper Zeon LTZ tires, Found a lot of Rover owners have these too. As far as I can see they seem to be the best tire for an all around on/off road all season with M+S rating. Also the do carry a 255/55/R19 and found a set at Tread Depot for 218/tire. Cant beat the price and the reviews are very good on these.
Think Ill be getting a set for my LR2, very soon. FYI up in Canada the cheapest you can find these tires are 339/tire what a rip!

I am doing the same research. There is a website that actually provides information on what tires to run on a "Disco 3".
In my perspective, I believe the best tyre is the Cooper STT's. I have them on my D1. They have a Kevlar carcase and have a very good tread pattern. It has gotten me out of the worst mud pit ever and climbs like no other. The road noise isn't that bad compared to others. What sucks, the smallest size for an 18" is 275/70....will need to lift it higher and will get stuck if there is a suspension failure.
I really don't like Good(ie)years....
Keep searching....

Added some 19" Cooper Zeons to my LR4 and give them 2 huge thumbs up.
-a little more road noise, but barely
-great on road in heavy rain.... zero hydroplaning so far
-so far so good in mud
-no complaints in snow
-after a little rock crawling with full wheel travel.... no rubbing
-nice stance and appearance

I have no idea about fitment to a 19" rim, but those were the exact tires I was looking at for my disco...and I ended up getting General AT2 Grabbers. Aggressive tread pattern, and the price point was right there (again, no idea about 19's). They had a bunch of good reviews compared to the BFG's, with similar off-road/snow performance but with better rain. Here in the "northern south" I get more rain than anything, so that was a bigger deal than snow/off-road. Still waiting for it to snow out here so I can give them a try in the white stuff. Overall I'm very happy with them after 2k miles; not noisy at all, and have had great street performance now that they're starting to get broken in. Anyway, hope that helps
