Default Tire rub damage

My 2008 LR3 has had Nitto Terra Grapplers (285/60R 18) for years now. I always knew they rubbed in a little under certain conditions but the damage to the tires I'm seeing looks worse than I would expect.

I'm having some body/suspension damage repaired (unrelated to the rubbing) and the body shop that found the wear says it comes from contact with the knuckles. The tires have about 35K mileage on them.

Anyone have any experience with this--is this wear acceptable or should I replace the tires? Thanks

To me it looks bad. I’d replace them to be safe. Would small wheel spacers keep them from rubbing? Might be worth checking into.

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. Was thinking of switching them out for 265's instead of 285.
