LH side secondary looks good. I can squeeze it down with not much force, but it springs back up.

This guitar string is just under 1mm and stops in both spots shown. It fits freely around the rest of the VVT gear.

The same 1mm guitar string gets tight at the high spot, but will pass. Fits freely round the rest of it.

Both VVT gears have a date code of 11H28 which translates to Nov. 28, 2006. I guess they’re both original after all.

The LH side appears to lube better than the RH side. Manually rotating the crank picks up oil on the LH, but not so much on the RH. Might explain why it looks much better on the left.

Insert the special crank locking tool. This was a pretty snug fit. The mounting hole is a bit off center so I couldn’t lock it down, but it won’t move. Cheap tools.

LH cams are locked. Had to re-drill cam holder holes on one tool. The holes were a hair off and wouldn’t fit right. Didn’t take much. The bolts were too long also so I used some spacers. Cheap tools.

New phasers arrived. They’re date coded to October, 24th and 25th of 2009. Makes me wonder how many of these are available. The boxes did look a bit aged.

The red plastic piece works to both press the seal to its proper depth, and it keeps the inner diameter PTFE seal expanded until installation. I learned that these PTFE seals must be installed dry. Do not oil the seal for install.

It took soft pressing several times to ensure the seal was fully seated evenly around the opening.

With the primary guides, chain, and tensioner in place, there’s a special tool that fits on the exhaust gear. With the crank locked at the flex plate, and the cams locked, the gears are in time with the chains on and tensioner retaining pins removed. The idea now is to lock the gears to the shafts. While holding the gears in place by applying counter clockwise force to the exhaust gear, tighten the intake gear bolt to 15 ft. lb. Then get your cheater bars out and tighten another 90 degrees.

Replace the seals on the VCT solenoid housing and install. These seals are Teflon split seals, not o-rings like the book says.

Front cover and harmonic balancer torqued. Crank spec is 280 ft. lbs. My torque wrench goes to 250 so I hit that plus a smidge.
