Unhappy Replaced front main seal, new seal leaking, ugh!

Just replaced front main seal (along with oil pump, head gaskets, timing chain kit, oil pan gasket, good cleaning, etc) and all started fine but I noticed oil leak.

Drip, Drip, every few seconds.
Looked under motor since all is clean and it is coming from front main seal. I just replaced it.

1) What did I do wrong? (don't expect an answer)
2) What do I need to make sure I do for next seal? I want to do this correctly, just once.

Something I noticed, the crankshaft pulley / harmonic damper appears to be wobbling ever so slightly while spinning.
Could it be possible I did not get a good seat on it while torquing it down? Does seem like it could............

I have put in some White Shepherd to see if that will stop leak, I have an hour drive today, 2 hour round trip.

Any feedback to be posted?

Don't expect WS to cure this one, but maybe. Wobble is not good IMHO. Because you notice this at idle and the forces increase at 2000 rpm.

Yes, I'd agree, wobble is not good. I will shoot a video of the crank moving and see if it will show up and post here.
Maybe I do not have it torqued down enough, I will go back and check. But that should not have to do anything with leaking oil seal IMHO.....

I hope I am not looking at dropping $670 on a new crank pulley / harmonic damper - Crankshaft Pulley / Harmonic Damper (Genuine Part # LHG000060) - Land Rover ancillary components from Atlantic British

But it is early in the diagnosis part. I need to take this a step at a time.

This info may not help you but I had my rear crank seal replaced 4x, still leaked. Used a rear main seal from the LR dealer and the leak magically stopped. The other 4 seals were aftermarket. So in my case it was a seal quality issue.

I would locate a new balancer, might seriously consider a good guaranteed used on. Try calling Paul Grant, his number is listed below, he should be able to help you.

Ordered genuine LR front seal, installed a little less deep, no leaks.
Will post photos later.

you found the secret, do not set the seal to sit exactly where the old one was; whenever possible set the new one in a slightly different location.

When replacing a seal it always pays to inspect the shaft or bore the seal rides on/in.
In this case it sounds like the crank pulley is grooved where the seal has been riding.
As you discovered, you can work around it by locating the seal in a slightly different place. If there isn't room to do that you can often install a Speedi-Sleeve to fix the problem.
