Default Coolant question

I tried searching for this and couldn't find an answer. The coolant light came on in my 04 Range Rover HSE. I checked the coolant and the level indicator is all the way down. So I know it's low. Don't see any signs of leakage though. I grabbed the owners manual and found that I need Castrol NF or Texaco AFC coolant. Where can I find this? I have some Napa 50/50 here but was too scared to use it. It is green however. I take it as I should use the Castrol or Texaco since it's stated in the owner's manual.

I did read this however on rangerovers.net "Note also that earlier models had Texaco AFC coolant, LRN6024 (orange), while later ones come with BASF G48 coolant (blue). Note that these should not be mixed -- or premature corrosion of the cylinder heads could result. "

This was stated for 04' models.

I would be more concerned with where the coolant is going.

You will have to go to the dealer to get it or buy it online.

Your other option is to do a complete flush and then use whatever you want.

Scott- It's hard to tell what color it is. She took it to a mechanic and he poured some regular old green coolant in it. It needs flushed ASAP. I wasn't aware of this until she told me now.

Wilson- I've looked for leaks and don't see anything. Can't even smell it. Usually you can smell it if it's leaking somewhere.

Spike- I've looked online and could only find the Texaco coolant and no luck with the Castrol coolant. Looks like I'm going to flush it and put whatever in it like you've said. Some regular green coolant since it's easier to access.

Haven't changed coolant in a Rover before. Is their a drain plug like other cars on the bottom of the radiator? Thanks for the help everyone!

Elementdo, go download the service manual from greenoval. It will give you the specific steps on coolant flushing. Get this done ASAP you are going to destroy your radiator and or engine with mixed coolant. I usually can't tell if my rover is leaking based on smell (probably because it smells like an old train) look for any visual signs of leakage. Sometimes it will leak somewhere and then evaporate off which makes it very difficult to spot, but you need to find the leak.

04 Range Rover use BMW engine. so it do use the blue coolant. You can also buy it from BMW as well it will be cheaper than Land Rover dealer.
To answer you question for where the coolant goes? Most likely you have head gasket and or ccv gasket leak. this is know issue with BMW engine that oil separatoe get freeze during low temp and pressure build up and blow the gasket. you can check that by seeing if you getting white smoke from you tale pipe.

I hope this might help

or you could add coolant dye and use a black light to see the problem area.
