Default 2022 Defender 110 Tailgate Latch/Alarm Issue – Diagnosis Confirmation

I’m running into a specific issue with the rear swing gate on my 2022 Defender 110 and wanted to see if anyone else has resolved this by replacing the latch assembly.

The Situation: After a valet stay, the tailgate began failing to lock. Even though all 4 doors stay locked, The soft-close motor still cinches the door shut, but it does not lock.

The Symptoms:
  • Single Press Lock: Mirrors DO NOT fold and the car gives two chirps. The doors stay locked. But the tailgate can still be opened. Opening the tailgate while the other doors are locked does not trigger the alarm. But, from time to time, the alarm would sound after a while.
  • Double Press Lock: Mirrors DO fold and the car appears armed, but most of the time the alarm triggers shortly after locking. Again, after locking the car, the tailgate is not locked.
I’ve already performed a hard battery reset and cleared a temporary "Low Battery" warning by driving, so I've ruled out low voltage logic errors.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues? If so, how did you resolve it?

Did replacing the LR147949 latch assembly fix the "Ghost Alarm" and the locking issue for you, or should I be looking at other causes?

Thanks for any insights!

I had a similar issue... but the latch that failed was my driver door. I replaced the latch/sensor and all of the alarm issues went away. I had my independent replace it (though they had to get the part from land rover). I'm not exactly sure- but I think it was around $7-800 to fix it

Thanks, @Kennyjr748 . Hopefully replacing my tailgate latching unit will resolve the issue.

Can someone please confirm for me that the correct latch assembly for soft-close tailgate is LR147949?
I looked at my existing latch, it says this: L8B2-404D88-AB....

Thanks.

I'm guessing one possibility is that you are checking to see if it's locked while your key is in your pocket. The tailgate will open even with the car locked when it senses the key.

Try it again with the key no where near the car. I suspect your issue will be a non-runner.

@GavinC Thanks for the catch on the proximity sensor! You’re absolutely right—I just tested it with the key away and the tailgate is physically locking. I feel a bit sheepish for missing that, as I’ve definitely seen that feature in action before without realizing the specific logic behind it.

However, I don't think I'm out of the woods yet. While the tailgate is physically locked, I’m still getting the two chirps and no mirror fold. I have done a crude test on the hood (a hard slam shut) trying to rule out the hood sensor....I am still getting two chirps. And I am still getting random alarms.

I am now even more confused. Where should I go next?

My shop was able to determine which latch it was. I had no idea which one was bad. It was an intermittent problem at first but it got worse over time. (Same alarm beep issues as you have and eventually the alarm would go off sporadically). I recommend checking your latches!

Maybe to the bar.

Double chirp on closing the tailgate when the car is unlocked (mirrors not folded in ) is normal. It alerts you saying. "Hey! buddy, you've closed the tailgate but you've not locked the car". It doesn't always do this.

I'm not fully sure on the sequence but if you've also opened a door prior as the car says to itself, "this bloke is well aware I'm unlocked as he's open and closed a door". The PIVI probably has to be powered off on it's timer to give that alert.

Something along those lines. ie: Normal.
