Alcantara Steering Wheel - Part option
You can/should clean the alcantara and it'll literally look like new. I used the Sonax Upholstery and Alcantara cleaner and just followed the instructions. Very simple, although I had to apply it multiple times before the rag came back clean. There are other cleaners. Once per year should be enough, although if you are eating burgers and fries while you drive it'll be more frequent.
Alcantara looks terrible if it isn’t cleaned regularly. That’s the step most folks miss.
I disliked Alcantara and avoided it for years based on experience with Audi S4 seats and Discovery 2 door panels about 20 years ago. I’ve turned a corner and the Defender steering wheel is one reason why. I now have two cars with Alcantara on the interior -- and if you clean it regularly, roughly every quarter, using the Sonax cleaner mentioned above, it stays looking nearly new. If you don’t, it goes downhill fast.
Look at most steering wheels once a car hits 20-30k miles. The leather turns shiny. It started matte. That shine is usually oil and contamination/dirt building up. The same thing happens to Alcantara. The difference is people don’t usually view a shiny steering wheel as dirty, even though it generally is. But the Alcantara with the same use, looks IMO far worse than the leather does. Regular cleaning prevents it. This Sonax stuff is fantastic.
This.
