Default Bad Front Differential

Have a 2022 110 with 90k miles and front diff needs replaced. Dealership wants over 6k to replace. Anyone else experience this problem with the new Defender? Is it common? Any ideas on what would have caused it to go bad? Thanks!

This is the first time I've heard of this problem. Any ideas why it needs to be replaced or what the symptoms are?

Was getting a bad whine when accelerating, especially over 40mph. Whine increased with each push of acceleration. Seemed to be worse under load, more people in the vehicle. Dealership used a stephiscope and says that it's the diff. Need to ask more about what caused it.

It sounds like you are inside the recommended service interval of 105k miles or 10 years for a front differential oil change. I’m planning on servicing mine well before.

Sorry to hear about this. Curious about any of the following conditions:

1 -- your use case - offroad / onroad / mix?
2 -- how many miles have you owned this. (you never know what on earth someone may have done to it if there was a prior owner, although these things are very robust so...)
3 -- has this Defender ever been in a front end impact ? (a hit to the side, which impacted the wheel, for example, could in theory cause damage to a differential -- it’s a stretch but damage could show up miles later not immediately)

This is first (well maybe 2nd) front diff I’ve heard going **** up on L663. Pretty sure the front diff is the same or very similar part (different size or packaging) that’s in the L405, L460 and L461 (ish) and not a ton of failures being reported there either so hopefully this is not indicative of a failure pattern.

Agree with servicing the diff before the 105K recommended service interval.

Hopefully not a sign of things to come.

Spitballing here if it were me: $6k is a dealer rate. To lower that number, try an independent JLR shop (a good one, not a crappy one) and have them replace it, you will save money. I’d go to a Land Rover specific shop, not a “Euro shop” or a shop that works on all marques but it depends on the market you’re in and what is available. Nothing special or tricky rocket science about replacing a front differential on this truck and you will be egregiously overpaying to have dealership rates do it.

Attached are the instructions to remove and replace the front diff. For a LR shop on a lift, probably a same day job easily. Remove the 2 half shafts, steering column lower shaft, associated bits/breathers, then the mounting bolts and then lower it. Replace.

Thank you for the response. Owned the Defender since new and its been a pavement princess, no offroad. No wrecks or damage either. That's why I can't understand why it went bad.

Know of any independent repair shops around south central Pennsylvania?

Thanks!

Default Rear differential

Hi!
I am experiencing same issue with my Defender 110. Bought it new in 2020, took it to the dealership for maintenance etc all the time, never an issue.
Had to take it recently for some
other reason related to a wet connector and a bad battery, now they have contacted me saying that during a road test the truck is making a noise and they think is the differential and is gonna cost me almost 9k 🥴 Truck is little over 52,000 miles.
any comment / answer will be helpful
thanks

Sorry to hear it.
Is your rear diff open or with a locker?

Do you have the rear locking differential?

If you do, a little bit of clunking at low speeds is completely normal. Mine does it. They all do it. Regular diff fluid changes are key to keep the rear locking diff at its best. JLR recommends every 63k to change the rear locking diff fluid, but it should really be halved.

I would have the dealer flush the diff and see if it makes a difference.

If it is extremely loud and you can really feel it clunking, then you might have a bigger issue and something more serious.

This really underscores the excitement I have around changing both my front and rear locking diff fluid last month at 30K miles. Jeez Louise.

The front fluid looked good / seemed still good.
The rear locking fluid was a thick viscous sludgy black mess.
