Folks, as title suggests, I currently own a 2025 Defender 110S and would like to know if connectting a battery to a maintainer/tender with the agm battery maintenance capability is a good thing, knowing how much parasitic draw all our electronic gismos are responsible for???
I had this on my Jeep wrangler and I avoided the battery problems most wrangler owners experienced.
I am retiring soon and will not get to drive as much as I’d like to keep everything fully charged all the time. So I’d like to plug it in when I know I won’t be using the vehicle for a few days.
If you’re not driving it all the time it’s an excellent idea. Low 12v charge causes lots of issues not least of which is software update failures. I have the CTEK unit that Land Rover rebrands as its OEM charger/maintainer.
Certainly no harm. But I find no issues with 2-3 weeks of not using it (when away on holiday etc). So if you're going weeks then it's a good idea. If it's just days then it doesn't seem necessary. Also depends if you do longer runs when you do use it (to fully recharge it).
Thanks for the replies, I have a Noco with the agm option. Where do you guys connect it??? I know the battery is inside the vehicle, but under the hood are connections…. Is that where you connect it ???? I have the wires to set it up permanently and leave it there.
@Darover2 - Each of those links has a picture of the connection points under the hood at one place or another. There's a stud for the ground and a red access plastic cover for the current. The threads show a lot of different ways folks have mounted it. The third link is a thread on how I changed it up. I recommend reading the threads at those three links. Good luck.
I use NOCO but all the good brand names will work. Make sure they are AGM compatible and have enough amperage so they don't take weeks to recharge, I put permanent cables on the engine jump start points and it works just fine. Plenty of space to close the hood *bonnet" while connected. Just remember to dis-connect when starting the car!
Ctek Time to go is what I use on my 911 with 12v cigarette port charing.
As I was too lazy to move my charger (and change cig adapter to clamps
), I bought his one. It's on sale for 50% off and made by tech guys in NorCal. Used for a few days and so far, I'm happy with it. (When my car died, I bought their jump starter and impressed with the design/built quality so I bought their charger too since it was cheap and easy to use).
On the L663 Defender, proper charging location is the terminals under the hood. Passenger side. Under red cover +. Black - post nearby. That’s your ticket. If you don’t want to open hood and use the alligator clamps you can put terminals and of course snake out a little waterproof cable with waterproof connector for your charger into the cowl area with very little effort. It’s right there. This is where I charge mine.
(Note: @isugoo - I do not believe charging a Defender is not recommended by JLR from the power ports inside the car. I could be wrong.. I do have a 991.1 and I do charge that from the interior pass footwell power port as you mentioned - works great. But - I’ve never used my 991’s charger on the Defender and have no idea if it’s even possible)
Anyway - yes, I’d put it on a good modern trickle charger. Couldn’t hurt. No issues. And keeps battery topped up.
Of my cars, the only one I do not regularly keep on a tender is my Defender, and I wish I did. I just am too lazy and there’s not a plug right where I park it. I need an extension cord and that’s a rigamarole and the trickle chargers all say not to use an extension cord anyways. I do put it on the tender maybe 2x a month over night or when I go out of town, and I do notice it cranks more quickly in the morning and the voltage starts higher (on my radar detector which displays the voltage).

I charge my 911 with 12v cigarette adapter on the center console not from the passenger side. On my 991.1 and 991.2, charged from center color without any issue.
For Defender, I had to change 12v. cigarette charger to clamps which is annoying (to move Ctek and change charing connector from 12v to clamps) so I bought the Hulkman and using claps. Defender is quite easy to charge as I only have to pop the trunk as positive and negative connections are right there without taking any other panels.
I do want to attach quick connects but I'm not sure what size nuts I need to buy to secure these washer style quick connect to positive and negative terminals. Do you happen to know?
