Brakes feel a bit spongy
Hi guys, I noticed my brakes on my 2023 Carpathian V8 with 9300 miles a bit spongy since I got it, I'm not sure if that's normal or should I have it looked at, thank you. My 2013 RRS Autobiography never felt like that.
Defender has brake-by-wire, your old L494 Sport doesn't. It basically means on the Defender, the brake pedal isn't connected to anything other than a brake booster to simulate feel. The pedal position tells the computer how much braking force to apply. There is a backup, so if the computer goes bad, you still have brakes. It is becoming very common across all automakers.
I wouldn't say my P300 has spongey pedal feel, but it certainly isn't wooden or stiff. I've driven the P400 and V8, and I feel that the pedal feel is very similar to my P300 despite having different brakes.
Brake fluid is supposed to be changed at 21k miles or two years. I'd have that done if it hasn't already been done and see if there's a difference.

You could probably increase feedback by modifying the CCFs. There are market specific settings and engine/brake package specific settings. I remember experiencing a similar change in pedal feel early on. Maybe it's finally worn in?

Brakes should never feel ‘spongey’. You say it’s been like this since you bought it, so it’s possible that they are normal as is, but since this may be your first experience with brake-by-wire, I would visit my dealership and request to drive a similar Defender and see if you can ascertain any difference, and/or have someone else who has driven one to drive yours to see if they agree on what you’re feeling in the pedal.

Yes, all that pedal feel is simulated. It has gotten pretty good to where it feels like normal brakes.
Some automakers you can manually change brake pedal feel with brake by wire. The C8 Corvette and Cadillac Blackwings have adjustable brake pedal settings. Even in my X1, the pedal gets a lot stiffer when in sport mode.
